My client is looking for a Design Manager that will lead the delivery of high-quality, technically compliant engineering solutions across water, wastewater, and infrastructure projects. This role oversees multi-disciplinary teams and design consultants, ensuring all designs are robust, safe, cost-effective, and delivered on time and within budget.
Responsibilities
- Lead the delivery of technical design solutions across water, wastewater, and infrastructure project and ensure all designs meet statutory, regulatory, and client standards
- Provide concept, outline, and detailed design for pipelines, sewers, pumping stations, and treatment processes
- Manage external design consultants and ensure contractual duties are met and coordinate multi-disciplinary engineering teams
- Oversee development of robust, operable, and maintainable asset designs
- Review, validate, and approve drawings, calculations, and specifications
- Support and monitor project teams with technical input and design decisions
- Manage design budgets and resource allocations
- Implement design change control procedures
- Identify design risks and opportunities
- Support engagement of specialist suppliers and technical partners
- Collaborate with operational, maintenance, and strategic stakeholders
- Provide oversight for temporary works requirements and design coordination
Essential
- Minimum 10 years\’ experience in design and design management
- Strong background in foul water drainage and potable water mains
- Degree/HNC in Civil Engineering or equivalent
- Membership of a recognised engineering institution (or working toward IEng/CEng)
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
- Experience managing multi-disciplinary engineering teams
- Proven ability to interrogate and challenge design information
- Strong time management and organisational skills
- Ability to deliver high-quality design outputs to deadlines
Desirables
- Experience working within large infrastructure programmes
- Knowledge of BIM and common data environments
- Understanding of temporary works processes and responsibilities
- Experience supporting supply‑chain and technical procurement
- Ability to develop design trackers and progress reporting dashboards
- Strong relationship‑building skills with clients and partners
