Job Summary

There is an opportunity for a Registered Nurse to join the Lindsey Lodge Hospice Clinical team on a bank basis.

The post includes a minimum of 6 shifts in 12 months and requires availability for short‑notice shifts.

The role will involve working 24‑hour shift patterns on the Inpatient Unit and occasionally in other hospice departments.

Main Duties

  • Lindsey Lodge Hospice provides 24‑hour inpatient care. The post holder will:
  • Work a variety of shifts across the 24‑hour day, rotating between day and night duties.
  • Primarily cover the Inpatient Unit, with occasional assignment to other settings such as Outpatients.
  • Deliver high‑quality specialist palliative and end‑of‑life nursing care as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Coordinate assessment, planning and evaluation of individualised patient‑centred care.
  • Maintain a respectful, non‑judgemental and inclusive attitude consistent with the Charity’s commitment to equality, diversity and inclusivity.

  • Work in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code.
  • Provide clinical leadership and act as a role model for high‑quality patient care.
  • Demonstrate specialist knowledge in symptom management of patients with palliative needs.
  • Deliver evidence‑based care that meets the holistic needs of patients and their families, including pre‑ and post‑bereavement support.
  • Promote nursing contributions within the multidisciplinary team.
  • Deputise in the absence of the senior nurse.
  • Ensure daily patient risk assessments are undertaken.
  • Assess patient needs and formulate, implement and evaluate total care plans.
  • Maintain frequent reassessments to reflect changing needs throughout the illness trajectory.
  • Discuss difficult situations with patients and families.
  • Communicate effectively with the wider palliative care team, maintaining confidentiality.
  • Initiate new ideas in consultation with staff.
  • Participate in own appraisal and performance reviews.
  • Report to senior nursing and medical staff on patient condition and provide/receive instructions.
  • Maintain clear communication channels.
  • Adhere to all Lindsey Lodge policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records, including electronic patient records.
  • Take responsibility for the general running of the unit, including care of patients, families and staff supervision.
  • Undergo medicine rounds in line with the Hospice Management of Medicines policy.

  • Be aware of Clinical Governance.
  • Identify and agree care standards, monitoring, evaluating and auditing implementation.
  • Implement and monitor Hospice policies, health and safety guidelines and professional regulations.
  • Report all accidents and incidents to the appropriate authority, acting with a duty of candour.
  • Maintain a safe environment, giving guidance on fire, security, manual handling and health and safety policies.
  • Use resources economically and effectively.
  • Familiarise yourself with unit equipment, ensuring correct and safe use.
  • Maintain accurate record‑keeping, recognising the legal importance of documents.
  • Discuss pertinent issues with the team, especially the senior or deputy nurse.

  • Lead the clinical team when required.
  • Supervise and train colleagues working on the same shifts.
  • Assist in staff induction when appropriate.
  • Make professional decisions on clinical care and unit management when the ward manager is absent.
