The Casual Scout (Housekeeper) plays a key role in supporting the day-to-day operation of Lincoln College by maintaining high standards of cleanliness, hygiene and presentation across the College's residential, academic and communal areas. Working on a flexible, casual basis, with hours offered in line with operational needs, the postholder will provide a reliable and friendly housekeeping service to students, staff, conference guests and visitors. The role involves carrying out a range of routine and periodic cleaning tasks, responding to the changing needs of the College throughout the academic year, including term time, weekends and conference periods. The Casual Scout will work both independently and as part of the housekeeping team, contributing to a safe, welcoming and well-maintained environment in a historic college setting.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • To maintain the cleanliness of residential, academic and communal areas in accordance with agreed housekeeping schedules.
  • Carry out a range of cleaning tasks, including:
  • Vacuuming, sweeping and dusting
  • Brass polishing
  • Cleaning kitchen surfaces (excluding washing personal student items)
  • Cleaning and descaling bathrooms
  • Emptying, defrosting and cleaning fridge/freezers
  • Waste disposal and recycling
  • Internal window cleaning where safely accessible
  • End of term deep cleaning
  • Tidying entrances and communal areas
  • Bed making for guest rooms only
  • Service guest and conference bedrooms to the required standard.
  • Ensure appropriate supplies of toiletries, towels and other items are available for guests and residents.
  • At the end of term, ensure cupboards, drawers and wardrobes are cleared and cleaned of any remaining belongings.
  • Report missing items, damage or maintenance issues promptly to the Housekeeping Manager.
  • Use cleaning materials and equipment safely and in accordance with training provided.
  • Keep cleaning equipment clean and in good working order.
  • Attend training sessions as required.
  • Wear the uniform and any protective clothing provided.
  • Sign housekeeping keys in and out of the Lodge personally each working day.
  • Be familiar with and work in accordance with College policies and procedures.
  • Provide reasonable cover for colleagues' sickness or holiday where required.
  • Promote a safe, healthy and welcoming environment.
  • Person Specification

    • Previous paid cleaning experience
    • Ability to communicate clearly with residents, colleagues and visitors
    • Ability to work to agreed cleaning standards
    • Ability to work independently and without close supervision
    • Ability to work as part of a team and be flexible
    • Availability to work weekends

    Physical Requirements

    • Sufficient fitness to carry out cleaning duties involving bending, lifting and stair climbing with reasonable adjustments where required.
