Moodle Technical Specialist in London

Fully remote contractor opportunity for candidates based in South Africa

Law Training Centre is looking for an experienced Moodle Technical Specialist based in South Africa to help us use Moodle more intelligently and effectively across learning delivery, administration, assessment, reporting and learner support. This is a remote contractor role expected to require approximately three days per week initially.

Law Training Centre is an established online legal education provider. We deliver regulated qualifications and professional legal training through Moodle, supported by specialist tutors and operational teams in the UK.

Moodle is central to how our learners access courses, complete assessments and progress through their qualifications. We want to make better use of its functionality to improve administration, the learner experience, progress tracking, reporting, automation and connections with other systems and learning platforms.

Law Training Centre delivers professional legal education and regulated qualifications through online learning.

We have strong subject matter expertise and high-quality course content. We are looking for you to improve how learners experience that content through its design and presentation.

This is a hands-on role. You will build, improve and implement, not simply advise.

You will work closely with our academic team and bring your own judgement, ideas and experience. We make decisions quickly, so you can test and implement strong ideas without lengthy approval processes.

• Review how Moodle is currently configured and used and identify underused functionality and opportunities for improvement.
• Improve cohorts, groups, enrolments, roles, permissions, completion rules and learner progress tracking.
• Develop useful operational and management reporting, improve data visibility and automate repetitive Moodle processes where appropriate.
• Improve the technical configuration, workflows, controls and reporting for assessments and examinations, and provide technical escalation support where required.
• Diagnose complex Moodle problems and coordinate appropriate resolutions.
• Assess plugins, including appropriate AI-enabled plugins, integrations, APIs, web services and automation opportunities.
• Assess opportunities to integrate Moodle appropriately with other learning platforms and systems.
• Translate internal requirements into Moodle configurations or clear technical briefs, and test and approve technical changes.
• Support the selection of a suitable Moodle hosting partner and plan and coordinate the migration, testing, implementation and post-migration issues.
• Brief and manage hosting providers, developers and other technical suppliers, including assessing recommendations, costs and completed work.
• Maintain appropriate configuration and technical documentation and oversee testing and release processes.
• Understand and monitor backup, restoration, security and recovery arrangements at an oversight and supplier-management level.

What we are looking for

• At least three years of substantial hands-on Moodle administration and technical configuration experience.
• Direct experience of a significant Moodle migration, major upgrade or platform transition.
• Evidence of improving how an organisation uses Moodle.
• Strong working knowledge of cohorts, enrolments, roles, permissions, completion, assessments and reporting.
• Strong Moodle troubleshooting and technical problem diagnosis skills.
• Experience translating non-technical requirements into Moodle configurations or technical specifications.
• Experience working with Moodle hosting providers, developers or technical suppliers.
• Practical experience involving plugins, integrations, APIs, web services, reporting or automation.
• Clear written and spoken English and the ability to work independently with a UK-based team.

Useful additional experience

• Five or more years of substantial relevant Moodle experience.
• Experience supporting regulated education, professional qualifications or examination delivery.
• Hosting procurement, supplier comparison or migration planning.
• Knowledge of hosting environments, databases, scheduled tasks, backups, restoration, security and recovery at an oversight and supplier-management level.
• Staging environments, security reviews, release control and disaster recovery testing.
• Experience assessing AI-enabled Moodle functionality or integrations with other learning platforms.

• Remote contractor engagement for a contractor based in South Africa.
• Approximately three days per week initially.
• Monthly contractor fee of R20,000 to R28,000 for approximately three days per week.
• Full-time equivalent of approximately R33,000 to R47,000 per month.
• The amount of work may expand or reduce depending on migration workload, platform development and continuing technical requirements.
• An initial 90-day self-employed contractor engagement, followed by review.
• At least six hours within the normal UK working day on each working day.
• Some flexibility outside these hours would be useful for planned technical changes, releases or migration activity.
• Availability for planned examination-day technical support would be useful but is not mandatory.
