We are seeking a skilled and reliable Banker/Fixer specialising in masonry and restoration work. The work involved is at a Grade A listed building doing some slappings and forming new openings in new and reclaimed stone, building previously down taken pediments, dormers, gable ends, chimneys and general indenting of stone cut to shape and style to match the historic precedent.
There will be a large amount of pointing using hot lime mortars after the stone replacement has been completed which poses a unique opportunity for a craftsman that wishes to broaden their skillset in heritage conservation work beside some exemplar craftsmen who will teach the candidate traditional methods of mixing, applying and finishing these historic mortars in various styles.
The ideal candidate will be responsible and accountable for the production of quality work, they must have a high regard for safety and a keen eye for the recreation of the historic aesthetic, utilising a range of hand tools and power tools, with a focus on craftsmanship and precision. Candidates must demonstrate a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Responsibilities:- Repairing and restoring stonework, brickwork, and masonry structures using appropriate techniques.
- Utilising hand tools such as chisels, hammers, trowels, and specialised masonry tools.
- Operating power tools including drills, grinders, and saws safely and effectively.
- Applying skills in stonemasonry, carpentry and other related trades as required for structural repairs.
- Collaborating with project managers to ensure work is completed to specifications and within deadlines.
- Maintaining a clean and organised work environment, adhering to health and safety regulations at all times.
- Proven experience in stonemasonry conservation and restoration, must be able to shape and construct traditional rubble and dressed stone.
- Demonstrable proficiency with hand tools and power tools used in construction and repair projects.
- Prior experience working on historic or specialised stonework is essential.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings or plans is desirable but not mandatory.
