The role

Software developers at Opencast build products with a focus on quality, using agile methodologies, extreme programming practices and industry‑leading languages.

They collaborate closely with clients and stakeholders, pair program, apply test‑driven development, refactor code, and deliver solutions that improve client workflows from discovery to live.

They work across multiple provider platforms, continuously learn new technologies, and enjoy varied, technically challenging assignments.

Key responsibilities

  • Drive the elaboration of the team’s backlog.
  • Set testing strategies that meet industry standards.
  • Act as a technical expert in the team or team lead.
  • Represent the team technically in project discovery.
  • Mentor and coach colleagues to help them reach their potential.
  • Demonstrate leadership within Opencast communities of practice.

Requirements

  • Must either currently hold active Security Check (SC) clearance or be eligible to obtain it.
  • Eligibility typically requires UK citizenship and continuous residence in the UK for the past five years, with no single absence exceeding 28 days.
  • Experience delivering digital services for the UK government is highly valuable; familiarity with the GDS toolkit is beneficial.
  • Technical Skills
  • Expertise in Java or Scala is required.
  • Experience in Kotlin, Ruby, or Javascript is also valuable.
  • Deep understanding of programming paradigms, code design, testing, accessibility, performance, and security.
  • Proven ability to apply different testing tools and methods in practice.
  • Knowledge or experience delivering complex services to Government Digital Service (GDS) standards.
  • Comfortable with new technology and ongoing learning; t‑shaped skill set is key.
  • Experience with agile methodology.
