THE COMPANY: Over the past 30 years L&T has become a global player in the medical simulation education market. It has ambitious plans for further growth in the next 5 years across the globe, through investment and new product development. Multi award winning and still privately owned, the £30M business has grown from a tabletop start up to a multinational business with its head office and manufacturing in Bristol, along with sales offices in the USA, Australia and Sweden. The vision of the business remains as it always has: to design and manufacture medical task trainers which through deliberate clinical practice help improve patient outcomes. People are at the heart of L&T, they comprise the expertise, contribute to, and deliver the vision, in this fascinating and growing market sector.

THE JOB: The aim of the role is to develop L&T products from early prototypes to their final production version, collaborating with Designers, Model Makers & Design Engineers who form part of their project team. The role liaises with OPS/ENG and PM Teams to deliver the project deliverables through the NPD phases. Working with Engineering to facilitate a smooth and accurate Tooling/Handover phase, follow all L&T procedures and update these when needed. Update and maintain all relevant documents and databases.

MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES: The role is responsible for the design and engineering of new Limbs & Things products in line with the NPD procedure, ensuring that agreed milestone deadlines are met. This includes checking that technical requirements align with user needs—particularly regarding learning objectives and user interaction—and ensuring that prototypes and final products are evaluated, tested, and ready for transfer into Engineering/Production. The role requires accurate planning and budgeting of projects, balancing cost, lead time, and quality. It includes creating and managing robust and well-organised CAD files, as well as generating accurate NPD BOMs and production-ready part specification drawings. Draft manufacturing and packaging instructions are also developed as part of the handover process. You’ll be expected to build high-quality functional prototypes, assist in evaluations, write reports, and manage design modifications. You will work closely with internal and external stakeholders and ensure that all project work follows company procedures and complies with relevant standards. This position carries leadership responsibility for delivering larger, more complex projects. You will manage and mentor a team of design engineers with varying skill levels, supporting their development and identifying training needs. You’ll also support recruitment efforts and oversee performance through the L&T PRP and regular one-to-one meetings.

REQUIREMENTS: Proven commercial experience of innovative product design/development and project management. Must provide evidence via portfolio from the last 24 months. Excellent CAD Skills (Solidworks). Must be able to communicate concepts/solutions via hand sketches/drawings and 3D mock-ups. Ability to build prototypes for evaluation and life testing. Basic engineering skills – turning, milling, drilling etc. Good understanding of 3D printing and its applications. Good modelmaking and mould-making skills. Excellent understanding of polymer materials – silicone rubber, PU, injection moulded plastic etc. Excellent understanding of product/industrial design and design engineering principles. Ability to build strong relationships with internal staff and sub-contractors. 10 years minimum relevant experience. Academically trained in Product Design, Mechanical Engineering or Design Engineering. Medical knowledge based on medical training and/or experience in medical practice would be a distinct advantage. A background in bioengineering or medical design/engineering would be considered if supported by relevant work. A minimum of 3-4 yrs. of team management experience. 12 years minimum relevant experience.

THE PACKAGE: In return we offer a competitive salary and a performance-related bonus based on personal objectives that pays up to 5% of your salary annually, study support and the chance to progress in a rapidly growing company.
