THE JOB

The role requires the design and development of integrated firmware solutions to meet the functional requirements of Limbs & Things’ training products. This position requires a pragmatic engineer with an open mind, strong problem-solving skills, and comfort with design and documentation processes. Responsibilities include supporting new product designs by meeting firmware requirements for electronic hardware and electronics design and testing. The role demands broad engineering skills in PCB design and the integration of hardware and embedded software to meet product specifications. Familiarity with various operating systems and platforms, a strong analytical mindset, and a keen eye for detail are essential. The candidate should be comfortable working as part of a larger project team and communicating effectively with subcontractors and in-house teams.

MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Understand product requirements and determine how they translate into integrated hardware and application features.
  • Write and edit system firmware.
  • Work with the Software Team to define requirements for hardware/software designs and integration into products.
  • Assist in feasibility studies to provide solutions for product development.
  • Manage the building of PCBAs according to specifications via subcontractors.
  • Perform unit and integration testing (including snagging) in accordance with project schedules.
  • Conduct functional and non-functional testing, and document accordingly.
  • Troubleshoot and debug applications, software, hardware and integrated systems.
  • Evaluate existing applications to reprogram, update and add new features.
  • Seek specialist external help where necessary and manage subcontractors and suppliers associated with systems design and development.
  • Develop technical documents and handbooks to accurately represent application design and code.
  • Manage L&Ts technical file data for electronic hardware.

REQUIREMENTS

Essential:

  • Relevant degree level qualification (EEE, IMEE, Mechatronics or similar background) with at least 1 – 3 years of commercial experience working in electronic & software design.
  • Real-time embedded C – Bare Metal.
  • Experience with developing firmware with STM32 and/or ESP32 microcontrollers.
  • Experience with developing on different communication protocols - I2C, SPI, I2S etc.
  • Experience with managing version control – Git.
  • Delivery of design documentation - Use of standard software design tools e.g. UML, flow charts, hierarchy diagrams etc.
  • Full product life-cycle experience - Design for manufacture.
  • Schematic Design and PCB Layout experience.
  • Experience of designing audio, motor and power electronics.
  • Knowledgeable of designing PCB layout to include effective risk management.
  • Use of standard electronics tools – Oscilloscope, Waveform Generator, Spectrum Analyser, DMM etc.
  • Board level testing and rework including SMT components.
  • Excellent communications skills; able to communicate with a mixed discipline team both within and external to the company.
  • Knowledge of quality management methodologies.

Desirable:

  • Experience with developing firmware with PIC32 microcontrollers.
  • Experience in developing “bed of nails” test fixtures.
  • Python.
  • Development in GUI software.
  • RTOS.
  • Experience with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
  • Experience with RFID and NFC.
