Summary of the Role: To ensure the optimum safe performance of PV solar and BESS assets within a designated region by undertaking preventative and corrective maintenance activities on HV systems up to 132kV and associated LV systems. The role has full ownership of the operational HV network and will be responsible for issuing safety documentation, conducting switching operations, and providing technical leadership across the asset portfolio.
As an Authorised HV Senior Authorised Person (SAP), you will undertake switching and safety document activities from 11kV to 132kV across a diverse portfolio of utility-scale solar and battery energy storage assets ranging from 3MW to 50MW. This is a home-based role with a company vehicle provided. The operational region extends from Kidderminster to Scotland, requiring regular travel across multiple sites and technologies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintain full compliance with all Company Health, Safety and Environmental procedures, Electrical Safety Rules and statutory legislation.
- Actively participate in the review and approval of Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) for HV and LV activities.
- Undertake the role of Senior Authorised Person (SAP), including the issue and cancellation of Safety Documents and the execution of switching operations on networks from 33kV to 132kV.
- Provide operational ownership of HV assets across the regional portfolio, ensuring the safe operation, maintenance, reliability and availability of the network.
- Perform and oversee preventative and corrective maintenance activities on HV and associated LV systems, minimising downtime and maximising asset performance.
- Work closely with the Planning Team to ensure HV maintenance activities are completed in accordance with the annual maintenance plan and agreed timescales.
- Track, manage and drive the closure of HV defects and remedial works in accordance with business priorities and risk assessments.
- Provide technical support and guidance to Authorised Persons undertaking switching operations in conjunction with the Control Engineer.
- Support the investigation of electrical safety incidents, equipment failures and network disturbances, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
- Coach, mentor and develop Authorised Persons, Junior Authorised Persons and other technical personnel through structured training and competency programmes.
- Support commissioning, energisation and construction activities associated with new Solar PV and BESS developments.
- Manage specialist HV contractors and service providers, ensuring works are delivered safely, compliantly and to the required quality standards.
- Lead and deliver HV improvement, refurbishment and replacement projects across the UK portfolio.
- Assist with insurance and warranty claims by providing technical reports and engineering evidence where required.
- Produce accurate maintenance, switching, fault response and technical reports within agreed timescales.
- Identify opportunities to improve network performance, reliability and operability through innovation, engineering best practice and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Take ownership of regional operational performance metrics and contribute to wider business improvement programmes.
- Carry out site audits, assurance inspections and compliance assessments relating to HV activities and Electrical Safety Rules.
- Participate in the HV standby and call-out rota as required.
- Support fault response, network restoration and emergency operational activities following plant or network outages.
- Act as the technical authority for assigned HV assets within the portfolio.
Knowledge & Experience:
- Working knowledge of HV distribution Systems.
- Ability to read schematic drawings and understand content.
- Knowledge of Electricity at Work Regulations, Health and Safety at Work act and Electricity, Safety, Quality and continuity Regulations.
- Working knowledge of protection schemes, protection relay operation and fault investigation.
- Strong operational knowledge of HV distribution and generation networks up to 132kV including switching, isolation, earthing and safety document implementation.
Work Skills:
- Full Driver's License.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office suite, Outlook, and other bespoke software packages.
- Ability to work in different environments.
- Excellent analytical, organisation & planning skills.
- Ability to identify problems, understand key issues and investigate alternatives.
Qualifications:
- Currently authorised as an HV SAP or able to demonstrate previous HV SAP authorisation and the competence required to achieve LSBP SAP authorisation.
- Educated to a minimum HNC level qualification in Electrical Engineering or equivalent demonstrable experience.
