As a Senior Environment Artist, working with the Lead Environment Artist and the wider art team, you will be responsible for ensuring the worlds we create delight players with the highest quality visuals, providing the backdrop for memorable experiences. You have a strong eye for detail and composition, enabling you to craft believable environments, and you take pride in both your own work and that of your team. You will help uphold quality by supporting and mentoring the environment art team, fostering a healthy culture where everyone can excel.
Key Duties Include:
- Create and Implement High-Quality Environments: Develop 3D models and textures for diverse environments, including terrain, geology, and water bodies (rivers, lakes, oceans), aligned with the game’s artistic vision and technical constraints.
- Collaborate Across Disciplines: Work closely with the Art Director, Game Designers, and Technical Artists to ensure environments are visually compelling, gameplay‑optimised, and meet performance targets.
- Leverage Advanced Tools and Techniques: Utilise industry‑standard tools (e.g., Gaea, World Machine, Houdini) and procedural workflows (e.g., Unreal PCG, Houdini) to efficiently create scalable, high‑quality environments.
- Mentor and Guide the Environment Art Team: Provide leadership and mentorship to junior and mid‑level artists, maintaining high quality standards and fostering a culture of creativity and excellence.
- Contribute to Reviews and Feedback: Participate in critiques and reviews of environment art, offering constructive feedback to ensure work meets both artistic and gameplay requirements.
Shipped Games: Proven experience shipping at least one major game title as a Senior Environment Artist.
Technical Proficiency: Advanced knowledge of 3D modelling and texturing software (e.g., Maya, 3ds Max, Blender, Substance Painter), alongside terrain creation tools (e.g., Gaea, World Machine, Houdini).
Game Engine Expertise: Strong experience with Unreal Engine or Unity, with a focus on environment integration and optimisation.
Terrain Creation & World Building: Create visually striking and physically believable terrain, leveraging real‑world reference to inform landforms, scale, and geological storytelling, ensuring seamless integration with lighting, materials, and gameplay needs.
Artistic and Design Fundamentals: Strong understanding of shape, form, composition, and visual storytelling principles to build compelling game worlds.
Collaboration and Leadership: Excellent communication skills, with experience mentoring others and working effectively across disciplines.
Desirable:
- Unreal Engine Expertise: Extensive experience with Unreal Engine 4 or 5, including Nanite, material creation, and Blueprints.
- Large‑Scale World Experience: Experience building expansive, open‑world environments.
- Photogrammetry: Experience capturing, processing, and creating terrain and geological assets using photogrammetry.
