Role Overview

The role of the Sports Mentor is to support pupils who are facing difficulties in school because of issues related to social, emotional, personal, behavioural problems or other factors. The Sports Mentor helps these pupils overcome their barriers to learning and fully engage with lessons to become more effective learners, and to improve academic and pastoral progress through the use of sport, physical activity, forest school and in‑class support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support pupils with challenging behaviour, social, emotional, or personal issues.
  • Deliver programmes for pupils with challenging behaviour.
  • Coordinate with staff to implement suitable behaviour interventions.
  • Communicate effectively with adults, children, parents, and carers.
  • Maintain sensitive and confidential communication with integrity.
  • Provide tailored support to improve academic and pastoral progress.

What you’ll need to succeed

  • Experience working with children of the relevant age.
  • Experience managing situations relating to challenging behaviour.
  • Ability to deliver programmes for pupils with challenging behaviour and coach staff on suitable behaviour interventions.
  • Strong listening skills.
  • Proven ability to deal with sensitive situations with integrity.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to create good relationships with pupils, staff and parents/carers.
