About the Scheme

The Liberty Specialty Markets Veterans’ Placement Scheme is designed to support Service Leavers as they transition into a career in insurance. The scheme recognises the transferable skills veterans bring, including decision-making, accountability, teamwork and experience operating in structured, regulated environments. Participants will gain practical experience through a small number of planned rotations across business teams, while developing an understanding of how insurance operates in practice.

About the Role

As part of the Veterans’ Placement Scheme, you will complete a series of placements across business teams, joining each team in a hands-on role and contributing to day-to-day activity while learning how risk, underwriting and operations work together. This is a working role, not a training course, with support and development provided alongside real responsibilities. The scheme is structured around a small number of planned rotations to provide breadth of experience, tailored to the individual’s interests within Insurance, while maintaining continuity and accountability in each placement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in a rotational program, engaging with various teams across Underwriting, Claims, Project Management, Operations and support functions to gain insights into the insurance industry.
  • Support day-to-day activities in Underwriting or Operational teams, contributing to tasks such as risk assessments, claims management, project planning, and operational support.
  • Attend team meetings, training sessions, and workshops to develop an understanding of processes, market dynamics, and organisational practices.
  • Collaborate with team members to analyse data and provide insights that can assist in improving workflows and client service.
  • Share feedback and innovative ideas to enhance processes and improve service delivery based on observations from rotations.
  • Adhere to all relevant regulatory requirements and demonstrate behaviours as set out in the Liberty Specialty Markets Conduct Risk Policy.

Development and Progression

During the placement you will receive structured onboarding and on-the-job learning, be supported by a manager and wider team, gain exposure to underwriting and related functions through rotational placements, and build an understanding of potential longer-term career options within the business. Successful completion of the scheme may lead to opportunities in permanent roles, subject to business need and individual suitability.

Who the Scheme is for

  • All Regular Service Leavers/Veterans that have left the UK Armed Forces are eligible, provided you have the right to work in the UK.
  • Transferable skills such as leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise tasks effectively.
  • A basic understanding of insurance concepts is expected. Prior knowledge of specific functions such as Underwriting, Claims, or Project Management is a plus but not essential.
  • Completion of the first level of the Chartered Insurance Institute exams would be highly beneficial.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint and willingness to learn relevant software tools used within the departments.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate in diverse teams.
  • A proactive attitude towards learning and a strong commitment to explore various career paths within the insurance industry.
