About the Role:

The primary responsibility is to manage and oversee the preparation of timely and accurate Financial information and returns, in accordance with local GAAP requirements for the Liberty entities in the Netherlands. A strong sense of accountability and ownership is required, showing agility and tenacity where necessary. The entities are inclusive of a coverholder, an authorized agent, an insurance carrier in run off and another smaller entity.

In addition, ensuring an appropriate control environment is maintained in all aspects of preparation and reporting. The role holder is expected to have ability to influence across the peer group to ensure Reporting Production and Operations and other teams are supporting the team in delivering statutory and regulatory reports accurately and on a timely basis.

The role also carries responsibility for overseeing projects relating to reconciling differences between local and US GAAP in NB Re and other Dutch entities, run-off and wind-down planning of certain Liberty entities. The role holder will act as a key finance point of contact for communications between the London and Netherlands teams, ensuring that reporting, control and US and local GAAP implications are properly identified.

About the Finance Department and Team

LSM operates through two primary legal entities which act as (re)/insurers: Syndicate 4472 and Liberty Mutual Insurance Europe Limited (LMIE), which are regulated by Lloyd’s, the Luxembourg CAA and certain overseas regulators in respect of their branch operations.

LSM also operates certain other regulated entities, both in the UK and overseas, with a range of activities, including a Lloyd’s managing agent, UK and EU service companies, and UK and EU intermediaries. In addition, the Financial Reporting team carries out accounting and reporting duties in respect of Liberty Mutual Group companies with UK reporting requirements.

The Financial Reporting team is responsible for completing a broad range of external reporting requirement for Solvency II, Lloyd’s reporting, and other local regulatory regimes. In addition, the External Reporting team is responsible for the production of statutory financial statements under local reporting rules, and for monitoring levels of capital resources and requirements under UK and other solvency regimes. All of the output from this function must be delivered to strict deadlines, requiring a high level of commitment from the staff involved, in particular at quarter ends.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To oversee and manage the team in the Netherlands who are in charge of the entities including managing the old LMSE financials feeding into LSME, NBRe, NWB & LMS.
  • Oversee the embedding of a new general ledger system (VISMA) in the Dutch entities, support LSM Legal Entity reporting with the finance reporting, production and operations teams.
  • To oversee and provide high quality inputs including branch results of relevant legal entities to the LSM Tax team in support of their responsibilities and deliverables.
  • To support the Head of Financial Reporting in the integration of the Dutch entities in terms of processes and workflow with the rest of the team.
  • Play a role in the implementation of improvements to Financial Reporting within LSM's Finance Change and FTOM programme.
  • To build a good working relationship with the audit team and to oversee audits of the relevant Dutch entities.
  • Provide ad-hoc technical accounting support to the team
  • To review and oversee the production of financial statements for NBRe and the remaining Dutch entities,.
  • Will be responsible for providing effective guidance such as supervising, managing and motivating team members.
  • Preparation and presentation of quarterly LSM Legal Entity management reports and other materials for the Financial Reporting and Controls Working Group and the Board.
  • To assist in the development of the team's technical knowledge of reporting requirements, together with the requirements of the appropriate regulatory regimes relevant to the relevant entities.
  • Oversee and manage projects relating to the run-off and restructuring of Liberty entities,
  • Act as finance lead on entity restructuring initiatives, coordinating with Legal, Actuarial, Tax, Group Finance and other stakeholders to identify and manage the reporting, control and GAAP implications of these projects.
  • Work through issues and reconciliation between local and US GAAP to understand differences in NB Re and the remaining Dutch entities.
  • Work with project manager to maintain project plans, governance and status reporting for run-off and restructuring initiatives, escalating risks to stakeholders as required.
  • Assess and implement changes to processes, controls and systems arising from entity run-off or restructuring.

Skills and Experience:

  • Professional qualification (ACCA, ACA) with 5-10 years of post-qualification experience
  • Experience of coordinating processes with multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, managing conflicting tasks, executive demands and deadlines
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including preparation of executive presentations, accounting papers and external reporting
  • Comprehensive financial accounting and reporting knowledge in US GAAP and Lux GAAP
  • Clear understanding of financial controls and importance of data integrity along with the ability to shape the control procedures for key reporting processes
  • Ability to interpret complex accounting and reporting guidance
  • Strong knowledge of Excel, Word and PowerPoint and general ledger systems
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Problem-solving and enquiring mind-set
  • Demonstrable persistence and resilience in pursuit of agreed objectives
  • Ability to work effectively as part of the wider finance team
  • A service oriented attitude to delivering the business requirements
  • Experience of managing or contributing to restructuring, wind-down or transformation projects within a financial services or insurance environment
