We are currently seeking an experienced plant-based engineer to join our team at Libertys Stocksbridge facility. In this role, you will promote the continuous improvement efforts of our operation in creating value and driving sustainable outcomes.

Reporting to the Lead Engineer Site Services & Cranes, and as a partner with a variety of operational customers and plant-based engineers, the role will see you responsible for leading the Structural support function across the Stocksbridge businesses. You will be required to engage with your teams, as well as internal and external technical specialists, to provide engineering input and support to the business to allow it to meet its objectives. You will be capable of working effectively across a variety of stakeholders to ensure optimal outcomes for the business.

The Role of the Structural Section Engineer:

  • Determine and allocate the engineering resources and materials needed to satisfy the operational and engineering requirements of the plant.
  • Devise and develop planned maintenance and inspection schedules and ensure that they are implemented to meet statutory, safety, quality and engineering requirements.
  • Provide technical and engineering expertise to Production Management and Department Engineers.
  • Ensure that plant, departmental personnel and contractors operate within and comply with relevant internal policies and statutory Health, Safety and Environmental legislation.
  • Ensure safety standards in the area are maintained and safe working procedures are documented, implemented and adhered to at all levels.
  • Carry out Safety and Housekeeping Audits on a regular basis to encourage improved performance.
  • Clearly implement and demonstrate the required approach to process safety in your area of responsibility, including the Management of Change.
  • Monitor and control expenditure on spares, materials and labour to keep within agreed budgets.
  • Identify and assist in the preparation of capital and revenue schemes, resulting in the continuous enhancement of engineering and production performance.
  • Develop, prepare and submit Major Maintenance proposals and major stop period schedules, with responsibility for justification and full implementation, in order to meet the programme of Works within agreed costs and timescales.
  • Organise and manage the training and development of the multi-discipline engineering team to provide a safety conscious and technically competent workforce.
  • Lead and assist in project implementation of capital, revenue and major maintenance schemes.
  • Negotiate contracts, organise and control specialist contractors providing both on and off-site maintenance and services, refurbishment and modifications.
  • Ensure that such contractors are competent and are adequately informed of the job requirements, arrange permits to work, agree access and safety procedures and ensure such requirements are adhered to.
  • Lead and co-ordinate investigations, identify root cause and implement solutions to any problems occurring within the area of responsibility.
  • Engage in development and failure reduction activities.
  • Monitor KPIs for the area of responsibility, identify any deviation from target and implement corrective action at the appropriate level, to include coaching of Team Leaders and Technicians to achieve these aims.
  • Responsible for teams compliance with requirements regarding thorough/conscientious recording of plant history (CMMS) to demonstrate that statutory obligations are being fulfilled and to facilitate the process of continuous improvement.
  • Manage and develop Craft teams to satisfy current and long-term Business objectives.
  • Ensure the team achieve their full working potential through ongoing updates, appraisals, 121s and PDPs, addressing any knowledge and skills gaps that may be in evidence.
  • Performance managing any technicians not contributing to the overall effectiveness of the team.
  • Develop and train the Team Leader to a standard, which would allow delegation of responsibilities and cover when necessary.
  • Develop, and be responsible for, a daily plan developed from 24-hour review meetings for area of responsibility, communicate across all disciplines, and ensure the coordination of resources to achieve the plan.

  • Your previous background in plant engineering and maintenance will see you well placed for the challenges of this role.
  • To be successful you will demonstrate the following criteria:
  • Engineering qualification (HNC or higher depending on other experience) and at least 5 years experience in either a supervisory or technical role.
  • Strong background in a structural/fabrication role.
  • Plant engineering experience, ideally within Infrastructure i.e. pipeline systems (Gas/Water/Air) and visual inspection of plant structures.
  • Experience and knowledge of Regulations including Working at Heights, Confined Spaces & Welding Fume.
  • Experience and knowledge of developing lift plans and acting as an appointed person/lift supervisor.
  • An understanding of risk management, Health & Safety legislation and their application in a steelworks environment.
  • Strong technical knowledge of engineering principles and reliability-based maintenance, ideally having a working knowledge of failure reductions and risk-based maintenance.
  • Well-developed communication and relationship building skills and an ability to work with various stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong root cause analysis and problem-solving skills with a collaborative approach to finding practical solutions.
  • Experience with a CMMS (INFOR current system).
