Physician Assistants are encouraged to consider a per diem moonlighting opportunity with Liberty Healthcare at the Dorothea Dix Center in Bangor, Maine. The Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center is a 51-bed psychiatric hospital which provides inpatient care to people who are experiencing mental illness. After-hours medical services are provided to hospital patients by Liberty’s skilled team of Physician Assistants.
Physician Assistants work weekday shifts 16 hours in duration from 4pm to 8am as well as weekend and holiday shifts 24 hours in duration from 8am to 8am. Scheduling is done well in advance and on an as-needed basis, though shifts occasionally become available on short notice.
Responsibilities include:
- Remaining on hospital grounds for the duration of the shift
- Rounding on hospital units
- Consulting with nurses and unit staff
- Assessing patients and providing episodic care
- Communicating with the on-call Psychiatrist as necessary
- Referring patients to the local ER as necessary

You are a good fit for this role if you possess an active Maine Physician Assistant license. Experience in primary care, urgent care or ER setting is preferable – and psychiatric / mental health experience is not required.
