The Technical Manager will lead the technical delivery and coordination of renewable energy projects across the full project lifecycle, from RTB acquisition and due diligence through tendering, construction, commissioning, grid compliance, and operational handover. The role will focus on utility-scale onshore wind, solar PV, and BESS projects, ensuring technical, commercial, and programme objectives are achieved while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and grid compliance.

A key responsibility of the role will be managing grid-related activities, including coordination with Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) and Transmission System Operators (TSOs), National Grid, ICPs, Owner’s Engineers, and OEMs to support successful grid connection, energisation, compliance testing, and operational performance.

The Technical Manager will work closely with internal commercial, procurement and construction, asset management, and operations teams, as well as external contractors, suppliers, consultants, and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Project Delivery
    • Lead technical oversight of renewable energy projects from acquisition through construction and into operations.
    • Manage technical due diligence for RTB and late-stage development acquisitions, identifying key technical, grid, programme, and delivery risks.
    • Coordinate project technical workstreams across onshore wind, solar PV, BESS, substations, and associated electrical infrastructure.
    • Support project execution strategies, construction methodologies, and delivery programmes.
    • Review and manage technical documentation, including specifications, drawings, design packages, and engineering deliverables.
    • Ensure projects are delivered in accordance with applicable standards, grid requirements, and contractual obligations.
    • Support commissioning, energisation, performance testing, and project handover to operations and asset management teams.
  • Grid & Electrical Infrastructure Management
    • Lead coordination of grid connection activities with DNOs, National Grid, ICPs, OEMs, and Owner’s Engineers.
    • Manage grid connection processes from offer acceptance through design approval, construction, energisation, and compliance testing.
    • Oversee delivery of substations, HV infrastructure, protection systems, SCADA, and grid compliance requirements.
    • Coordinate grid studies, compliance testing, and technical assessments related to grid code and network requirements.
    • Support optimisation of grid performance, export capacity, and operational flexibility across wind, solar, and BESS assets.
    • Monitor grid-related risks, constraints, outages, and programme impacts.
  • Construction & Commissioning Support
    • Provide technical support during construction and commissioning phases.
    • Coordinate resolution of technical issues arising during construction, testing, and energisation.
    • Support site teams in managing interfaces between civil, electrical, and mechanical workstreams.
    • Participate in progress meetings, technical reviews, FATs, SATs, and commissioning activities.
  • Miscellaneous
    • Tendering & Contractor Management - Support preparation, evaluation and appointment of EPC, BoP, OEM, and key supplier tenders. Monitor contractor performance, programme delivery, technical compliance, and quality standards.
    • HSEQ - Promote a strong culture of health, safety, environmental, and quality excellence across all project activities.
    • Stakeholder Management - Support technical reporting to senior management, investment committees, and project partners. Build and maintain strong working relationships across internal and external project teams.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, Power Systems, or related discipline.
  • Minimum 5–10 years’ experience delivering utility-scale renewable energy or infrastructure projects.
  • Strong experience in onshore wind, solar PV, BESS, and grid connection infrastructure.
  • Experience working within an IPP, developer, EPC, utility, consultancy, or Owner’s Engineer environment.
  • Strong understanding of HV electrical systems, substations, grid compliance, and energisation processes.
  • Experience managing technical interfaces across development, engineering, construction, and operations.
  • Familiarity with UK grid connection processes, DNO requirements, and renewable energy regulations.
  • Strong commercial awareness and understanding of project contracts and risk management.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and coordination skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and project management/reporting tools.

Desirable

  • Experience supporting renewable energy project acquisitions and technical due diligence.
  • Knowledge of Grid Code compliance and ancillary/grid support services.
  • Experience with SCADA, EMS, PPC, and BESS integration.
  • Professional membership or chartership status (IET, ICE, or equivalent).
  • IOSH, SMSTS, or equivalent safety qualification beneficial.

Other Requirements

  • Willingness to travel regularly to project sites, and stakeholder meetings across the UK.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and technical workstreams simultaneously.
  • Proactive and solutions-oriented approach with strong attention to detail.
  • Comfortable working within a fast-paced, startup phase and growing IPP environment.
