Purpose
Politics in London - and across the country - stands at a crossroads. Londoners increasingly feel abandoned by Labour and the Conservatives, and populism is on the rise. There is a real opportunity for the Liberal Democrats in London to seize - to win in all sorts of communities across the capital and deliver for local people. But only with the right people and teams in place to seize it. The Capacity & Membership Officer will be at the heart of a team of staff and volunteers working to identify and empower new activists, grow our teams, and develop our local parties - with a particular focus on boroughs that currently do not have Lib Dem representation. It’s only by growing our footprint right across the capital that we can take on the dangerous forces of populism and put Londoners of all backgrounds first. Through a programme of phoning, mentoring, and developing single issue campaigns, the postholder will collaborate with the London regional party and local parties in our boroughs to find new activists and members - and crucially make sure they find a rewarding and impactful place in our teams.
Main Responsibilities
- The successful candidate will play a key role in a team of staff and volunteers, whose primary focus is to grow our member and activist base - especially in our smallest local parties without elected Liberal Democrat representatives.
- They will identify and recruit new members and activists - through a systematic program of phoning prospects, identifying skills and interests, and integrating them into local parties so that they have a rewarding and impactful experience.
- They will ensure that any offers of help - online, on the doorstep or anywhere else - are acted upon, and will work to help local parties and other volunteers use our tech to engage with and track new prospects.
- Together with a team of staff and volunteers, they will help to develop single issue campaigns on key issues for Londoners and in line with Liberal Democrat values - with a particular focus on monitoring the success and uptake of these campaigns, and developing new member and activist prospects discovered through these campaigns.
- They will work to improve the new member and activist experience - helping smaller local parties to more effectively take on new offers of help, and ensuring that new recruits are not left to wither.
- They will work alongside the existing staff and volunteer teams to coordinate mentoring and training for new recruits.
- They will develop plans - including mentoring - to increase the diversity of our membership and activist base in London.
