Purpose of the Job
After a historic 2024 General Election and 2026 Holyrood Election, giving the Liberal Democrats 6 MPs and 10 MSPs in Scotland, we’re ready to go further. We’re looking for a driven and strategic Campaigns Manager to turn that momentum into sustained electoral growth across Scotland. This is a senior role focused on winning. You will work with MPs, MSPs, candidates, councillors, volunteers and staff to build professional, disciplined and ambitious campaigns that convert strong local foundations into electoral success.
Key responsibilities
- Lead and deliver winning campaigns in priority areas across Scotland, directly managing key contests where required and ensuring campaigns are professional, compliant and strategically focused.
- Work closely with MPs, MSPs, candidates, councillors and local party teams to run structured campaign planning meetings, set clear objectives and drive progress against voter contact, fundraising and organisational targets.
- Build sustainable and self-sufficient campaign teams in held seats by strengthening volunteer recruitment, leadership capacity and local fundraising.
- Develop campaign-ready infrastructure in emerging priority seats, including clear strategy, messaging frameworks, data-led targeting and measurable growth plans.
- Support and develop local organisers and campaign staff through mentoring, training and where agreed line management, helping to grow a confident and capable team.
- Embed best practice in data, digital campaigning, literature production and compliance across Scotland.
Person specification
We are looking for a strategic campaigner who understands what it takes to win competitive elections and can help others raise their game. You may have developed your experience within a political party, an advocacy organisation, a membership body, a trade union, a charity, or a comparable campaigning environment. What matters most is a track record of delivering results in high-pressure, target-driven campaigns.
You will demonstrate:
- Experience of managing or playing a senior role in complex campaigns with measurable outcomes.
- A strong understanding of political messaging and how to translate strategy into compelling communications across print, digital and direct voter contact.
- The ability to analyse data and voter insight to inform targeting, messaging and resource allocation.
- Strong leadership skills, with experience motivating volunteers or staff, building effective teams and building positive relationships with stakeholders.
- Sound political judgement and an instinct for what resonates with voters.
- The confidence to challenge constructively, set high standards and hold teams accountable for delivery.
- The ability to work independently across a large geographic area, prioritising effectively and responding calmly to unexpected developments.
You will be someone who combines strategic thinking with practical delivery, and who enjoys working with teams at different stages of development — from well-established strongholds to emerging growth areas.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Significant experience in campaign management or comparable project leadership in a political or advocacy context.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to shape persuasive messaging.
- Excellent organisational and planning skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Experience working with volunteers and/or distributed teams.
- Confidence using data, CRM systems and digital campaign tools to support targeting and reporting.
- The ability to operate effectively across a large geographic area, with a full clean driving licence and access to a car.
- Sympathy with the aims and values of the Liberal Democrats.
Desirable Skills and Experience
- Experience of managing staff, including remote management.
- Experience of electoral campaigns.
- Experience of fundraising strategy and delivery.
- Experience using tools such as Fleet, Lib Dem Connect, Lighthouse, Affinity Publisher (or similar design software), and Typeform — or the ability to learn new systems quickly.
- Experience designing or delivering training and mentoring programmes.
Please note: We will not be able to employ you if you are not eligible to work in the UK. We will not be able to obtain a work permit on your behalf. Applicants are encouraged to inform us if any reasonable adjustments are needed to be made during any part of the recruitment process. The Party believes it is essential to foster equity, equality, diversion and inclusion within our workforce.
