Zöe Franklin MP is seeking a part-time Communications Officer to join her team in her Guildford office. The role is instrumental in helping residents of the constituency keep up to date with the work that Zöe is doing in parliament and locally. We have a friendly and active team in the Guildford office, and this is a busy role which would suit an enthusiastic and proactive individual who wants to be involved in promoting Zöe’s work with the flexibility offered by a part-time contract.
Key responsibilities
- Evolve, monitor and update Zöe’s social media and online presence in the constituency.
- Produce graphics and video content promoting Zöe’s work, as well as publicising surgeries and news alerts and similar items.
- Follow up on social media queries and comments received.
- Manage and monitor social media enquiries, dealing with cases that do not need to be transferred to a higher level.
- Ensure all enquiries are dealt with in a timely manner.
- Monitor media coverage, liaise with media contacts, prepare press releases as required (on constituency, non-party-political matters).
- Produce and press responses, liaise with media contacts, meeting deadlines as appropriate.
- There may be a requirement for the role holder to work outside of the normal working hours and travel for work occasionally to Westminster and around the constituency.
Additional responsibilities
- Proactively work with the Parliamentary Assistant to recommend to the MP ways to raise constituents’ issues in parliament via speeches and questions.
- Review press releases, materials and guidance from the Lib Dem Press Team and respond/act as required.
- Work with our occasional Press Volunteer to maximise the press opportunities that are available.
Skills required
- Effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to adapt the tone of your work for the audience.
- Strong interpersonal skills allowing effective relationships to be made with press contacts.
- Good organisational skills to manage competing priorities with short deadlines.
- Experience of using graphic design and video editing packages e.g. Canva, Adobe.
- Experience of managing social media channels.
- Sympathy with Liberal Democrat values.
- It is preferred that applicants have a minimum of 6 months experience in a parliamentary or related role.
Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
