Charlotte Cane MP is seeking a proactive and highly organised Communications Officer to play a vital role in shaping and delivering her communications across her constituency and beyond.
You will lead on producing timely and effective public communications, including social media content, press releases, newsletters, graphics, videos and other materials that help residents understand Charlotte’s work and the issues affecting Ely and East Cambridgeshire.
Working closely with Charlotte and the wider team, you will identify emerging themes from casework, local meetings and community engagement, and turn them into accurate, accessible and engaging communications.
All members of Charlotte's team are also involved in supporting answering constituent queries based on policy.
Duties include
- Lead the development and delivery of the MP’s communications strategy across all key channels.
- Coordinate the MP’s social media presence, ensuring content is accurate, engaging, timely and aligned with strategic priorities.
- Work closely with the MP and colleagues to identify emerging themes and translate them into effective public communications.
- Establish, monitor and update a social media and online presence in the constituency; produce online graphics, video content, and publicise surgeries and news alerts.
- Produce press releases, liaise with the media, and meet deadlines as appropriate.
- Follow up on social media queries and comments.
- Critically analyse patterns of enquiries and articulate the findings in reports and communication with the MP and other staff members.
- Attend constituency meetings as appropriate.
- Deal with large numbers of standard queries, as well as assisting on more complex cases from members of the public by phone, email, social media or face‑to‑face.
Ongoing communication may be required.
- Draft responses to constituents.
- Ensure records are kept and information managed confidentially in line with the data protection legislation.
- The role may require occasional travel and work outside normal hours.
Essential Skills and Qualities
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to write clearly and accurately for different audiences and formats.
- Strong judgement, including the ability to handle sensitive, high‑profile or fast‑moving issues appropriately.
- Proven ability to develop clear messages and turn complex policy, casework or local issues into accessible public communications.
- Strong understanding of social media and digital communications, including the ability to create, edit and publish engaging video content for key platforms.
- Excellent attention to detail, including accuracy, tone, grammar, proofreading and factual checking.
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing deadlines and deliver high‑quality work at pace.
- Confidence in dealing professionally with journalists, stakeholders, constituents and colleagues.
- Discretion, resilience and sound judgement when handling confidential information or working under pressure.
Desirable Skills and Experience
- Experience in parliamentary or communications roles is ideal.
- Knowledge of the constituency.
