The Role
As part of our Platform Engineering team, you will play a crucial role in designing, building, and maintaining our internal developer platform. This platform is focused on enhancing the developer experience by embracing golden images/paths, self-service, AI, integration, and automation. You will be part of a small team delivering this platform for a scale-up challenger cloud bank, requiring a deep understanding of resilient cloud infrastructure design.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Architecting highly available, fault-tolerant, and cost-effective solutions on a secure and performant platform.
- Collaborating with our engineering teams to analyse, solve, and correct issues in real-time, providing end-to-end problem resolution.
- Refining and automating regular processes, tracking issues, and documenting changes.
- Working within a collaborative cross-functional team and fundamentally assisting our software engineers with designing and implementing infrastructure as code.
- Sharing knowledge with the team to ensure operational resilience.
- Assisting software engineers with designing and implementing infrastructure as code within a collaborative cross-functional team.
- Investigating new technologies and completing POC investigations.
- Taking ownership and responsibility for projects.
- Monitoring and reporting on system status.
- Improving the security of the infrastructure and platform.
- Providing 24/7 on-call technical support as part of a sensible rota 1/5 weeks.
- Occasionally performing out-of-hours activities on critical resources.
Key skills
- An expert understanding of core AWS services: VPC, RDS, S3, IAM, EKS, EC2, CloudWatch, Route53.
- Expert level knowledge of Linux.
- Highly proficient and able to share understanding in scripting or programming languages (Bash, Python, Go).
- Ability to diagnose, resolve, and document issues across the estate.
- Good understanding of DNS (Route 53, Cloudflare, etc.).
- Strong understanding of RBAC and the principle of least privilege.
- Excellent documentation skills, capturing processes, illustrating architectures, and authoring runbooks.
Experience
- Demonstrable skills and experience within a Platform Engineer role or similar (SRE, DevOps).
- Infrastructure as Code (IaC): understanding the core concepts of using IaC tooling. Terraform is LHV\'s preferred tool, but can include experience with CloudFormation, Puppet, Pulumi etc.
- Using the terminal to monitor, interrogate, query and configure resources using CLI tooling - e.g. AWS CLI, kubectl etc.
- Experience with Git-based version control systems for managing solution source code.
- Hands-on experience applying zero-downtime deployment patterns in Production environments.
- Knowledge and experience of containers and container orchestration, including Docker and Kubernetes.
Desirable skills and experience
- PCI/ISO27001 exposure or working in the financial sector.
- AWS Certifications (associate level or above).
- Experience working with some, or all, of the following tools and technologies:
- CI/CD tooling, for example: GitHub Actions / GitLab CI / Jenkins.
- AWS Systems Manager.
- Experience / familiarity with Confluence and Jira.
