An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Legal Counsel to join a large-scale UK consumer-facing business operating at the intersection of financial services, digital commerce, and technology.
This interim assignment offers the chance to work within a well-established in-house legal team supporting a regulated financial services proposition alongside a substantial commercial contracting function.
This is a genuinely broad role, combining consumer credit and FCA regulatory advice with significant exposure to commercial and technology contracts, supporting a business with millions of customers across the UK.
The Opportunity
Reporting into the Head of Legal, you will act as a trusted advisor to senior stakeholders across Financial Services, Compliance, Risk, Product, Technology, and Operations.
The successful candidate will provide both strategic and day-to-day legal support on regulatory matters and complex commercial agreements.
Key Responsibilities
- Advising on UK consumer credit and financial services regulation, including the Consumer Credit Act, FCA Handbook, Consumer Duty, payment services, and wider regulatory matters.
- Supporting the development, launch, and ongoing management of regulated consumer finance products.
- Drafting and negotiating customer-facing terms and conditions, ensuring fair customer outcomes and regulatory compliance.
- Leading on a wide range of technology contracts, including software licensing, Saa S, outsourcing, infrastructure, and managed services agreements.
- Negotiating broader commercial and financial services agreements covering partnerships, distribution arrangements, data sharing, servicing, and supplier contracts.
- Supporting major regulatory change initiatives and horizon-scanning for emerging legal and regulatory developments.
- Working closely with Compliance and Risk teams on governance, policy, and control frameworks.
- Advising on complaints handling, incident management, remediation programmes, and customer outcomes.
- Managing regulatory interactions, including engagement with the FCA and other supervisory bodies.
- Instructing and managing external legal counsel where appropriate.
- Coaching and supporting junior members of the legal team.
- Candidate Profile
Applicants should be
- Qualified Solicitors in England & Wales with ideally 5+ years' PQE.
- Experienced in both financial services regulation and commercial contracting.
- Strong in consumer credit, FCA regulation, and regulated financial services environments.
- Comfortable advising on a wide variety of commercial and technology agreements.
- Skilled at influencing stakeholders and operating within a fast-paced, commercially focused business.
- Experienced in working closely with Compliance, Risk, Product, and Technology functions.
- Keen to mentor and support more junior lawyers.
- Exposure to operational resilience, outsourcing, data protection, or fintech environments would be advantageous.
