Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Crime Duty Solicitor to join a dynamic Criminal Defence team. You will provide expert legal advice and representation to clients under arrest at police stations and during Magistrates’ Court proceedings, both under the Legal Aid Agency's Duty Solicitor Scheme and for privately funded clients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Attend police stations (in person or remotely) to advise and represent clients detained under arrest or for voluntary interviews.
  • Represent clients in Magistrates’ Court hearings, including first appearances, bail applications, and sentencing hearings.
  • Undertake out-of-hours and weekend duty solicitor rota commitments as required.
  • Provide high-quality legal advice to clients at all stages of criminal proceedings.
  • Prepare legal documents, including case summaries, witness statements, and court bundles.
  • Liaise with police, prosecution, court staff, and other professionals.
  • Manage your own caseload, ensuring compliance with Legal Aid Agency requirements and internal procedures.
  • Keep accurate and timely attendance notes, records, and billing information.
  • Keep up to date with relevant legislation, case law, and legal practice.

Essential Requirements:

  • Qualified Solicitor with a current practising certificate.
  • Accredited Duty Solicitor status (Magistrates’ Court and Police Station).
  • Strong advocacy skills and experience representing clients in criminal courts.
  • Excellent understanding of criminal law, evidence, and procedure.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle a demanding caseload.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A flexible and proactive approach to work, including participation in the out-of-hours rota.
