An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Legal Counsel / In-House Lawyer specialising in Litigation & Debt Recovery to join an established and collaborative in-house legal team. This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified solicitor or Legal Executive with a strong background in litigation, debt recovery and monetary claims, looking to move into or further develop their in-house career.
You will manage a varied caseload of litigation matters, including both pursued and defended claims, while providing practical legal advice to internal stakeholders on debt recovery processes, litigation strategy and regulatory requirements. The role offers the opportunity to work closely with operational and senior stakeholders, take ownership of your caseload and contribute to effective commercial and legal outcomes in a supportive environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a varied caseload of litigation matters, including pursued and defended claims.
- Handle matters relating to debt recovery and monetary claims, from initial assessment through to settlement or judgment.
- Review evidence, assess the merits of claims and determine appropriate litigation and settlement strategies.
- Ensure cases are progressed efficiently and in accordance with court deadlines, procedures and the Civil Procedure Rules.
- Represent the organisation at court hearings where required.
- Provide practical legal guidance to internal stakeholders on debt recovery processes, litigation strategy and policy.
- Work closely with operational teams to support effective and compliant debt recovery activity.
- Ensure litigation activity is managed in accordance with relevant statutory, regulatory and procedural requirements.
- Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders and provide consistent, commercially focused legal support.
- Support the wider legal team through knowledge sharing and, where appropriate, supervision of colleagues.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of litigation and debt recovery processes.
About You
We are looking for a qualified solicitor or Legal Executive with excellent experience in handling Debt Recovery cases. You will have:
- Strong experience of litigation, debt recovery and monetary claims.
- Good knowledge of County Court proceedings and the Civil Procedure Rules.
- Experience managing a caseload independently from instruction through to resolution.
- The ability to assess evidence, identify risk and determine appropriate courses of action.
- Strong communication skills and confidence handling difficult or challenging conversations.
- Excellent analytical, organisational and problem-solving skills.
- Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to work collaboratively with non-legal teams.
- A practical and commercially minded approach to providing legal advice.
Desirable (non-essential)
- Advocacy or court representation experience.
- Previous supervision or team leadership experience.
- Experience working within a regulated or highly regulated environment.
