Job Description About the Role: Technology Transfer Manager The NIHR Intellectual Property Unit supports the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) with expert guidance on IP, commercial, and contractual matters across the NIHR portfolio. We\’re seeking a Technology Transfer Manager to help ensure that NIHR-funded intellectual property is effectively identified, managed, and translated into impactful health and care outcomes in the UK and beyond. You’ll lead and support initiatives to enhance IP management and integration across the UK health research ecosystem. The role involves managing commercialisation cases, resolving complex IP queries, and contributing to strategic process improvements. Key Responsibilities: Support delivery of the NIHR IP work plan and manage core IP Unit processes Lead a portfolio of commercialisation cases, negotiating return models and preparing briefing notes for DHSC Provide IP advice via regular Open Sessions and respond to NIHR staff queries Deliver IP training to NIHR programme staff and funded organisations Improve IP Unit tools, systems, and processes Ensure consistent IP management across project lifecycles—from application to closure Liaise with legal advisors, commercial partners, research teams, and NIHR stakeholders Represent NIHR on relevant committees and working groups Draft progress reports, respond to FOIs and parliamentary queries Maintain and update the NIHR IP Unit’s website and materials Contribute to quality assurance and cross-NIHR coordination efforts This role suits a collaborative, detail-oriented professional with a strong understanding of IP, commercialisation, and the UK research landscape Qualifications We are particularly looking for individuals with experience of IP and commercial issues associated with at least one of: Technology licensing and commercial negotiation from universities or the NHS Medical device and diagnostic development A degree in a relevant subject (a relevant professional qualification would be desirable) or comparable professional experience Detailed knowledge of life science research gained from working in a university, NHS Trust, company or charity Knowledge of intellectual property management in the public and private sectors to generate impact from research Understanding of the different organisational goals of universities, NHS Trusts, charities and companies and how these need to be balanced when negotiating with organisations An understanding of technology transfer licensing arrangements Desired Criteria Knowledge of the regulatory framework for intellectual property management A proven track record in obtaining appropriate legal advice on intellectual property management issues An ability to analyse situations taking qualitative and quantitative factors in to account, including return on investment models An ability to draft succinct and informative documents for senior level decision makers providing them with sufficient information for decisions to be made Experience of project management, including organisational skills and meticulous record keeping Effective planning, organisational and prioritisation skills with the ability to manage own time to deliver multiple priorities with demanding deadlines Excellent interpersonal skills and customer focus, including successful senior level external liaison and meeting management to agree mutually acceptable outcomes Additional Information Salary & Benefits £48,600 to £51,300 per year Bonus – subject to company performance 25 days annual leave, plus public holidays (UK) Enhanced contributory pension scheme Life Insurance Benenden Healthcare Season Ticket Loan Please Note: This is a hybrid role based in our Twickenham office. Employees are required to work in the office at least one day per week. In addition, the role involves regular travel across England, including weekly visits to Southampton and Leeds.
