An exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic scientist to join the Cell Metrology team within the National Measurement Laboratory (NML) at LGC, based at Nexus, University of Leeds innovation hub.
We are looking for an early career post‑graduate cell biologist with flow cytometry and cell sorting experience who can assist in developing and improving quantitative methods for cell‑based measurements for national and international standardisation initiatives and for stakeholder collaborations and commercial services.
Current research efforts are focused on addressing fundamental and emerging cell measurement challenges and, in particular, optimising single‑cell measurements through the use of cell culture and bio‑imaging techniques such as flow cytometry and confocal microscopy to identify key cell critical quality attributes.
Job Description
- Independent day‑to‑day planning and delivery of work.
- Responsible for conducting analytical work including method development and validation, biological specimen preparation, data acquisition and subsequent data analysis for flow cytometry and cell sorting.
- Create working instructions and maintain laboratory notebooks.
- Contribute to scientific writing to produce publications and client reporting and represent the team in internal and external events.
- Contribute to the maintenance of quality, health, and safety records, adhering to ISO9001 quality management system.
- Participate in maintaining cleaning procedures, ordering consumables and general upkeep of the laboratory.
- Responsible for routine maintenance to determine system performance, service contracts, operation and troubleshooting of flow cytometry and cell sorting instruments.
Training will be provided, as appropriate, on traceability of measurements to the System of International Units, uncertainty estimation workflows, instrument software packages and on quality management systems required for the delivery of the projects.
This represents a good opportunity for candidates looking to progress their career in cell‑based measurements and the potential to lead future projects.
There is also an opportunity for the individual to undertake a part‑time Ph D with an academic partner after completing a couple of years in the organisation.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have relevant industrial experience in cell culture and designing and performing multi‑parametric flow cytometry panels in a variety of samples.
Essential
- Proficiency in running, troubleshooting flow cytometry and cell sorting instrumentation.
- Extensive cell culture experience using adherent and suspension mammalian cell lines and primary cells.
- Good understanding of cell characterisation and enumeration techniques.
- Proficiency in method development and validation skills with a keen interest in improving methodology/practices.
- High level of organisation regarding sample preparation, data collection and data analysis.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and work collaboratively in cross‑functional teams.
- Willingness to learn new techniques and integrate into existing processes.
Desirable
- Proficiency in the use of FCSExpress, Flow Jo, Cyt Expert or Attune software for flow cytometry data analysis.
- Experience of using the Attune, Cytoflex and BD FACS melody instrumentation.
