Department Overview
The management of operational risk is a key business priority for Nomura and is vital to the successful delivery of the firm’s strategy. The EMEA operational risk team has responsibility for the development of operational risk management for the region, including:
- Developing the operational risk strategy and governance framework
- Establishing a set of operational risk products and services to support the business areas’ management of operational risk
- Developing the tools and templates to allow the effective collection, review and use of operational risk information
- Working with Risk & Control officers across the business to embed an operational risk culture throughout the organisation
Operational Risk forms part of the Second Line of Defence within the Risk Department.
Overview
The GM Product Manager – reporting to and supporting the Global Markets Lead – will be responsible for:
- Leading Operational Risk Management’s engagement with regional Trading Senior Management as well as Senior stakeholders supporting the business across Operations, Technology, Compliance and Risk Management;
- Providing guidance on risk and control matters, forming an independent and consolidated view of the business risk profile;
- Partnering with front office and relevant 2LOD functions (including Financial Risk Management) to deliver on risk mitigation efforts.
Business specific coverage will depend on the relevant skills of the successful candidate.
Specific Responsibilities
To support delivery of these priorities, the Operational Risk Manager role will involve:
- Developing a close working relationship with key stakeholders across all departments and providing ongoing communication of key Operational Risk developments and requirements.
- Taking ownership of and/or providing direct oversight of the delivery of key business reports (tailored / value add reporting tailored to suit audience)
- Developing specific aspects of the operational risk framework as required
- Providing support and challenge to key business stakeholders in their development and maintenance of Operational Risk products; including: RCSAs, KRIs, events
- Using internal and external data sources to identify key trends, issues and other insights requiring further investigation and following up with the 1st line stakeholders as appropriate.
- Overseeing the delivery, where required, of Targeted Risk Assessments and Post Event Appraisals
- Observing and challenging Operational Risk Embeddedness in the 1st line (Performance and Operational Risk Awareness review)
Key objectives critical to success
- Primary ORM lead for the senior stakeholders in 1LoD
- Providing independent expert advice to the business areas on operational risk issues
- Developing, disseminating communications and training the business to raise awareness of operational risk
- Actively contributing to the global framework development
- Observing trends and analysing internal and external data to provide value-add observations and recommendations directly to senior management and/or for inclusion in Exec and Board reporting
Skills, experience, qualifications and knowledge required
Candidates for the position should have:
- Experience, in the capacity of Front Office COO, 1LOD Risk and Control Role or trading background – either in 1st or 2nd line capacity – of Global Markets Trading Business, with demonstrable product (Macro, Credit or Equities) knowledge.
- A good understanding of the front to back activities of a Global Markets Trading Business
- Track record of building relationships and advising/challenging senior management on risk matters (financial or non‑financial)
- Experience in operational risk or related functions in financial services institutions
- Have experience and understanding of the components of an operational risk management framework
- Display commercial awareness and an understanding of key business priorities
- Very strong communication and presentational skills
- Proactive, self‑starter who can work effectively as part of a global team
