About this role

Are you interested in building innovative technology that shapes the financial markets? Do you like working at the speed of a startup, but want to tackle some of the world's most sophisticated problems? Do you want to work with, and learn from, hands‑on leaders in technology and finance? At BlackRock, we are looking for an Associate Software Engineer who is eager to learn, build, and grow. We recognize that strength comes from diversity, and will embrace your unique skills, curiosity, and passion while giving you the opportunity to develop technically and as an individual.

With over USD $11 trillion of assets, we have an exceptional responsibility: our technology empowers millions of investors to save for retirement, pay for college, buy a home, and improve their financial well‑being. Being an engineer at BlackRock means you get the best of both worlds; working for one of the most sophisticated financial technology companies and being part of a software development team responsible for next‑generation technology and solutions.

About the Team

Our Platform Engineering division is at the forefront, building the foundation for Aladdin, an operating system for investment managers that integrates real‑time management of information, people, and technology. Aladdin is used by numerous financial institutions both internally and externally, and this team plays a critical role in protecting our estate and driving new revenue and scale channels for our clients and BlackRock. The SDLC team supports internal engineering customers by providing foundational libraries, build infrastructure, modern container images, upgrade strategies, and policy compliance for our supported development environments. We cover Java, Python, .NET and are expanding coverage to include Rust, Golang, and JavaScript, and need talented engineers to help build and support these efforts.

You’ll join a supportive team with a healthy mix of experience levels, working alongside Directors and a Technical Fellow who set a high bar for technical excellence. This is a team where you’ll be mentored, challenged, and given real ownership from day one.

As an Associate Engineer, you will:

  • Get stuff done. You’ll contribute to delivering solutions in a complex operating environment, learning how to navigate multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.
  • Help build the SDLCs. While Java, Python and .NET are established, the Rust, Golang, and JavaScript SDLCs are greenfield. You’ll contribute to designing and building these from the ground up, working with senior engineers to create standardized tooling that delights rather than hinders our internal customers, while reducing compliance risk.
  • Improve the SDLC build system. Platform provides a standardized build environment that reduces duplicative work and meets our compliance obligations. You’ll contribute to a simplification and modernization effort, getting deep into the internals of how software is built and shipped at scale.
  • Develop your craft. You’ll build strong foundations in software engineering, learning how to design, test, and deploy resilient systems. You’ll gain exposure to multiple languages and toolchains and develop an understanding of how platform teams operate at scale.
  • Grow with the team. We’re a collaborative team that invests in each other. You’ll learn from experienced engineers, share your own ideas, and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.

What you’ll need:

  • Early career experience. 1–5 years of software engineering experience, or equivalent through internships, personal projects, or a relevant degree. Financial services experience is not required.
  • Solid engineering fundamentals. A good grasp of at least one programming language, data structures, algorithms, and version control. You write clean, testable code and care about doing things well.
  • Curiosity about new tech stacks. You’ll work across multiple languages and build infrastructure. You don’t need experience in all of these — a willingness to learn and adapt is what matters most.
  • Interest in build systems and CI/CD. You’ll help maintain and improve a standardized platform. Experience with build tools, containers, or CI/CD pipelines is a plus, but not essential.
  • A team‑first mindset. You’re comfortable asking questions, seeking feedback, and collaborating with others to deliver great outcomes.

Who you are:

  • Curious and motivated. You want to understand how things work under the hood. You’re drawn to problems, not deterred by them, and you actively seek out opportunities to learn.
  • A reliable teammate. You follow through on commitments, communicate openly, and support those around you. People enjoy working with you.
  • Proactive. You don’t wait to be told what to do. You look for ways to contribute, flag issues early, and take initiative where you can.
  • Hands‑on. You like building things. You’d rather get stuck in and learn by doing than sit on the sidelines.
  • A clear communicator. You can explain your work and your thinking to both technical and non‑technical audiences, and you’re not afraid to ask when something isn’t clear.

Our benefits

To help you stay energized, engaged and inspired, we offer a wide range of employee benefits including: retirement investment and tools designed to help you in building a sound financial future; access to education reimbursement; comprehensive resources to support your physical health and emotional well‑being; family support programs; and Flexible Time Off (FTO) so you can relax, recharge and be there for the people you care about.
