Job Goal: The Special Education Teacher will provide instruction, assessment and program planning for special education students with a primary disability such as autism, learning disability, mild intellectual disability, and/or other health impairments; monitor and evaluate student progress and behaviour; research, obtain and provide instructional materials for special education services; serve as an informational resource for students, parents, district personnel and community organisations; work within a pull-out/push-in environment or within a self-contained classroom.
Reports to: Principal & Director of Exceptional Children.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Provide instruction, assessment and program planning for special education students and participate in preparing Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals and objectives for eligible students.
- Assess student progress and determine the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques.
- Employ various teaching techniques, methods and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals.
- Develop and implement annual Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students to include: present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals.
- Schedule team meetings and work cooperatively with team members and others in developing instructional goals and strategies.
- Coordinate the delivery of special education services in each student's IEP.
- Train and provide work direction and guidance to assigned personnel; organise and conduct in-services for staff as directed.
- Operate a variety of office and classroom equipment including a computer and assigned software, and nursing/medical equipment.
- May be responsible for assisting students who have toileting, hygiene, feeding, dressing, and other activities of daily living needs.
- Employ and implement a classroom structure and consistency to encourage student responsibility, cooperation, and mutual respect consistent with district policies and procedures.
- Provide consultation to classroom teachers regarding classroom adaptations, instructional modifications, adaptive equipment, behaviour modification plans and other similar instructional interventions to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
- Serve as primary contact for the parent regarding student's IEP.
- Establish and maintain standards of student behaviour to achieve an effective learning atmosphere.
- Keep appropriate records and prepare progress reports and enter grades in district software programs.
- Create an environment for learning through student displays and exhibits of work.
- Supervise classroom and students and volunteers.
- Meet standards set forth by State Department of Education Certified Teacher Evaluation Model.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
Physical Requirements: Requires light work that involves walking, bending, or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis or routine keyboard operations.
Compensation: 190-Day Teacher Contract; 2026-2027 Lexington Four Certified Teacher Salary Schedule.
Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with Board Policy and the State Department of Education Certified Teacher Evaluation Process.
