Job Summary

Assists Physical Therapists by administering physical therapy services designed to restore function and prevent disability following trauma or disease through the use of various physical therapy measurements, exercises and modalities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree as a Physical Therapist Assistant
  • Graduate of a PTA program approved by the American Physical Therapy Association or an equivalent program recognized by the South Carolina Board
  • Years of Experience: None
  • Licensed by the South Carolina State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners
  • CPR Certification

Essential Functions

  • Provides direct physical therapy patient care upon physician or advanced practice provider referral as outlined in the PT’s plan of care.
  • Provides developmentally appropriate care for the following patient populations:
    • Infant (Birth‑1 year)
    • Child (1‑12 years)
    • Adolescent (13‑17 years)
    • Adult (18‑65 years)
    • Geriatric (over 65 years)
  • Administers physical therapy treatments (therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, modalities) to relieve pain, restore function, and maximize performance.
  • Obtains objective measurements (manual muscle testing, functional ability, range of motion).
  • Documents treatment data in patient progress notes and discharge summaries.
  • Instructs patients and families in home exercise programs.
  • Represents the department in interdisciplinary meetings and communicates effectively.
  • Follows orders from physicians and hospital staff; notifies supervising therapists for updates on the plan of care.
  • Provides in‑service classes to other departments as needed.
  • Assists in clinical supervision of students.

  • Demonstrates sound professional judgement, complying with state practice act, hospital and departmental policies.
  • Participates in professional development activities.

  • Maintains a professional, courteous, and compassionate image.
  • Exhibits teamwork, respecting patients, visitors, and co‑workers.
  • Adheres to attendance and tardiness criteria.
