Introduction

We are seeking an experienced social work practitioner to join the Space for Change team as an Advanced Practitioner – this is an exciting opportunity for those seeking to develop their skills and be part of leading a team modelling best practice in supporting families.

The Space for Change team offer parents a package of support alongside a detailed, evidence based and reflective analysis of their capacity to safely care for children. Our assessments normally take place under the auspices of the Public Law Outline or Care Proceedings.

The Space for Change team is based within our Multi-Agency Child Protection Intervention Service who are at the heart of supporting families in Lewisham. The service is based within the Family Help and Care division and works closely with allocated social work teams to provide intervention to families that keep children living safely at home.

It’s an exciting time to join Lewisham as we are at the forefront of social work reform as a Wave Families First for Children Pathfinder Local Authority. The Multi-Agency Child Protection Intervention Service is at the heart of delivering key interventions that keep children safe. The post holder will be part of a Local Authority taking a lead role in supporting other Local Authorities to embed the reforms as part of the wider DfE national roll out.

What’s the role?

We are looking for a dedicated and experienced social work practitioner who has experience of completing in-depth, complex assessments with families.

The role involves the supervision of staff, writing court assessments, : work, and leading on best practice in assessing parents in the court arena. You will have a robust understanding of the family law context and be experienced in giving evidence in court.

You will be keen to be part of a service modelling best practice. All Parenting Assessors in Space For Change will receive specialist training in utilising the Parent Assess Framework for parents with learning disabilities as well as training in completing Domestic Violence Risk and Vulnerability assessments.

Supervisory experience is desirable as the role involved deputising for the team manager, supervising staff and quality assuring reports completed by parenting assessors.

About You

You will be an experienced social worker with significant post-qualifying experience in a relevant field. You will have a thorough knowledge of current child protection practice and the Public Law Outline and Care Proceedings. You will be familiar with court directed assessments and timescales, and have a track record of completing these to a high standard.

You will have an excellent understanding of the risk and vulnerabilities that impact on parenting capacity, and be able to provide analysis and recommendations to support meaningful change.

You will have experience in:

  • A minimum of three years of post-qualifying Social Work practice and experience of managing a frontline safeguarding caseload
  • Informal/formal supervisory experience of staff
  • Working with parents who have complex needs where there is a risk of significant harm to their children
  • Completing parenting assessments – or other assessments of parents regarding the safety and well-being of children for use in the Family Court.
  • Giving evidence in the Family Court
  • Using the Signs of Safety practice framework to structure your assessments and interventions with families.
  • Completing family network meetings to achieve the safety and well-being of children.
  • Understanding of Children Act and London Safeguarding Children Procedures

Location

The job is primarily based in Laurence House in Catford, London, SE RU. There are local train stations – minutes’ walk from the office, and the train journey from London Bridge is approximately minutes. There are also numerous bus routes that stop right by the office.

We operate a hybrid approach where you will be required to work both in the office and from home on a regular basis.
