Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust is seeking an exceptional and forward-thinking Matron for Theatres at University Hospital Lewisham (UHL) to lead our theatre teams and support the ongoing delivery and transformation of perioperative services.

Key Responsibilities

Provide professional and operational leadership for Theatre Services at University Hospital Lewisham.

Promote a culture of safety, quality and continuous improvement across all theatre areas.

Lead and support service transformation programmes to improve efficiency, productivity and patient outcomes.

Ensure compliance with national standards, Trust policies and regulatory requirements.

Work collaboratively with Surgical, Anaesthetic, Recovery and Day Surgery teams to deliver seamless perioperative care.

Support the effective management of theatre capacity, utilisation and patient flow.

Lead on workforce planning, recruitment, retention and staff development initiatives.

Oversee clinical governance, incident management, quality assurance and risk management processes.

Champion evidence-based practice, innovation and quality improvement methodologies.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As Matron, you will provide visible professional leadership across theatre services, ensuring the highest standards of quality, safety and patient experience. Working in partnership with clinical, operational and corporate colleagues, you will lead service improvements, support elective recovery ambitions, optimise theatre utilisation and contribute to the development of modern, efficient and patient-focused perioperative pathways.

This role offers the opportunity to influence strategic decision-making, champion excellence in clinical practice and develop a highly engaged and motivated workforce.

We are looking for an inspirational and experienced leader who can demonstrate:

  • Senior leadership experience within Theatre Services or Perioperative Care.
  • Strong understanding of theatre operations, elective pathways and perioperative patient journeys.
  • Proven experience of leading service improvement, transformation and change programmes.

  • Experience managing performance, budgets, workforce and operational challenges within a complex healthcare environment.

Qualifications and Training

  • Degree Registered nurse [Part 1] / or theatres Practitioner Post registration qualification or equivalent experience in theatres specialty
  • Master’s degree in relevant discipline or in process of studying to Masters level or equivalent experience
  • Evidence of Post Graduate Specialist qualifications relevant to area of practice (examples –:non-medical prescribing; mentorship , coaching , leadership or clinical expertise)
  • Change or human factor training
  • Management or supervisory qualification / programme of study

Experience

  • Proven experience of working in surgical specialities and theatres including high volume and/or day surgery
  • Senior clinical experience within speciality.
  • Partnership/multi-professional working.
  • Managing staff
  • Developing and implementing service development initiatives. Demonstrate experience of change management
  • Participation in developing and implementing Training and Competency development programmes for departmental staff.
  • Research or audit.
  • Proven track record of staff development and team working
  • Management of finances within a budget, including delivery of cost improvements
  • Achievement of high quality patient care through evidence-based practice
  • Leadership of clinical governance and patient safety
