Location: Lewis-Manning Hospice Care, 56 Longfleet Road, Poole Dorset BH15 2JD

Required: Flexible – Mon, Tues, Wed and Fri only AM or PM

Purpose: To provide opportunities for patients to engage in meaningful activity, social interaction, skill acquisition and creative expression. Volunteers facilitate art and craft sessions, as well as supporting staff with pre-planned art and craft activity sessions with patients invited to participate. This role may also involve 1:1 engagement in small groups. It is important to remember that these sessions are not art classes but an opportunity for people to come together, concentrate, socialise and have autonomy over how and what they draw/make. The range of activities are continually expanding and includes colouring-in, shared reading, card making, puzzles, quizzes, poetry writing, drawing a range of games and more. This role will support the emotional wellbeing and quality of life of patients, families, and carers through meaningful activities and creative sessions which will bring joy, comfort, and connection in a warm and supportive environment. Whether it’s painting, chatting over a puzzle, or simply offering your time — your presence can brighten someone’s day.

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Support special projects such as seasonal decorations, memory crafts, or celebratory events
  • Encourage participation in a gentle, inclusive, and person-centred way
  • Clean resources between patient use adhering to our infection control guidelines.
  • Observe patients during sessions, noting how they respond to activities, any positive/negative comments, and highlighting any changes in mood/behaviour/interaction with others.
  • Ask patients how they found the session and provide feedback to the clinical team.
  • Encourage patients to take photos of any artwork/poetry produced during the session if they have their own camera phone
  • Be prepared to find that patients may not feel well enough to participate from time to time. In addition, appreciate that patients will have appointments with other Hospice staff & volunteers and may need (sometimes frequently) to leave the session.
  • Helping to set up materials and the room in preparation
  • Assisting participants during the course of the workshop
  • Helping to clean up after the workshop

Skills and experience:

  • You do not have to be an artist to apply for this role. We are looking for confident, enthusiastic and patient volunteers with an interest or hobby in art or craft.
  • Enthusiastic, friendly, chatty and creative with an interest in arts, puzzles, poetry, and music.
  • Warm, friendly, and compassionate nature
  • Able to communicate well and enjoy working with and listening to people.
  • Understanding to the varying needs of patients.
  • Helpful, empathetic and patient at all times.
  • Self-motivated and have the ability to take initiative
  • Experience with visual art making of any kind is desirable
  • Comfortable interacting with people from all walks of life, including those with complex needs
