About Level Zero
Level Zero is pioneering next-generation biosensor technology for precise, real-time monitoring of critical endocrine biomarkers. Recognised as one of the top 20 startups across all categories worldwide at TechCrunch Disrupt 2024 — and backed by top‑tier organisations like SOSV and Entrepreneur First — we’re pushing the boundaries of biochemistry and nanotechnology to revolutionise personalised health. Founded by two seasoned engineers, we bring extensive experience in R&D, technical innovation, and commercial strategy to transform the way people monitor their health. Our mission is bold: to revolutionise health management by delivering clinical‑grade data directly to individuals, wherever they are.
About The Role
We are excited to welcome a lead biosensor scientist with a strong background in lateral flow assay R&D, scale‑up and experience in working with aptamers to join our rapidly growing start‑up. The ideal candidate is expected to be proficient in bench and wet chemistry techniques. Moreover, they should have proven knowledge and experience in assay development and nanoparticle surface modifications (biomolecules, small molecules). It is essential for the candidate to have extensive experience in aptamer‑based and antibody‑based nanogold colourimetric biosensor R&D, including the designs, operation principles, troubleshooting, and analysis.
This is a full‑time, in‑person role primarily based in London.
Responsibilities
Lead the development and scale‑up of LFA components and assay designs.
- Perform conjugation procedures between nanoparticles, aptamers, proteins, and small molecules, and optimize these procedures to meet performance parameters in assays
- Validate aptamer biorecognition and the performance of functional gold nanostructures in different biological media using colourimetric assays
- Fabricate biosensor devices, working from prototype iteration through to mass manufacture
- Analyse and organise raw experimental data as technical reports
- Work closely with the R&D leadership to optimize progress toward R&D milestones
- Attend R&D‑related trainings and seminars for continuous updates on the latest trends in hormone‑sensing technologies
Qualifications
- PhD in chemistry, materials science, biomedical engineering, bionanotechnology or a related discipline, with a focus in aptamer nanobiosensors
- At least 4 years of industry experience
- Proven knowledge and experience in lateral flow assay development, including launching assays to market
- Proficiency in wet chemistry laboratory techniques, including nanomaterial characterisation and liquid‑handling techniques
- Experience and deep understanding of gold nanostructures: their use in biosensors, synthesis, and opportunities for surface modifications
- Strong experience in assay development, particularly in unlocking key hurdles such as non‑specific binding and signal‑to‑noise enhancement
- Expertise in the R&D of colourimetric nanobiosensors and aptamer biorecognition
- Experience with aptamers and small‑molecule handling skills
- Experience in leading a small team
Nice To Have
- Experience in gel electrophoresis and blotting methods
- Experience with metallic nanostructure analytical skills such as ICP‑MS or ICP‑OES
