At Leonardo, we have a fantastic new opportunity for a Principal Safety Engineer. Working within the Integrated Sensors & Protection Line of Business, you will support the Design Authorities to assure safety of products.
You will provide assurance that products comply with Safety, Environmental and Legislative requirements, primarily within the land, naval and airborne domains. Working with other safety specialists, you will play an active role in maintaining and enhancing the Product Safety and Environmental Impact Management System, which is integral to Design Integrity.
The role can offer flexible home working, with the expectation of travel within the UK and occasional international trips.
What You Will Do
- The Principal Safety Engineer will typically produce the following artefacts:
- Safety and Environmental Plans
- Safety and Environmental Case Reports and supporting documentation
- Hazard Logs, and associated Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA), Physical Hazard Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
- Assessment of supplier safety compliance, in accordance with legislative and contractual safety requirements.
- Safety analysis activity reports such as Product/ System Safety Assessment Reports
- Safety input to life-cycle management core engineering processes, design reviews (e.g. PDR and CDR)
- Develop Environmental Suite of documents including:
- Environmental Features Matrix
- Environmental Impact Screening and Scoping (EISS) report
- Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)
What We Need From You

Ideally, you will have an engineering or science-based Honours degree and have worked in industry, defence or will have relevant experience such as the below:
- Experience analysing complex systems from a safety perspective, considering the system functions
- Knowledge and experience of Safety Case development for complex systems within an Electronics or Avionics discipline
- Experience of working with Def Stan 00-051, 00-055, 00-056, IEC 61508 (or similar)
- You must be capable of achieving full SC security clearance and will require access to caveated information such as UK eyes only.
It Would Be Nice If You Had
- Understanding of RTCA DO-178 and DO254 or IEC 61508
- Experience in implementing or improving Safety Management Systems
