Job Description:

We are looking for an RF Engineer at Senior or Principal Level to join Leonardo in Edinburgh. Leonardo is a world-class defence technology company. We develop cutting-edge radars for the Eurofighter Typhoon and SAAB Gripen fighter jets, as well as maritime and airborne surveillance systems. We also invest in innovation, conducting our own research to fuel future products. We are recruiting talented, motivated engineers to join our growing electronics team.

This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer to bring their skills and knowledge into our environment. You will be involved in developing multifunctional RF, PCB, and module designs using the latest technologies and enhancing your understanding of key design and manufacturing processes.

As an RF/Microwave engineer, your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing the full hardware lifecycle from concept, detailed design, prototyping, testing, verification, system integration, to support in production.
  • Creating high-quality, robust designs, conducting design reviews, documenting work, maintaining configuration control, and providing progress reports.
  • Developing multifunctional RF PCB and module designs with the latest technologies and understanding manufacturing processes.
  • Designing test prototypes for validation, verification, and production testing support.
  • Carrying out detailed design activities from requirements to verification.
  • Ensuring successful completion of design reviews.
  • Preparing manufacturing data packs and providing technical support to subcontractors and manufacturing interfaces.
  • Collaborating with systems, test, and electronics engineers to solve integration problems on advanced systems.

You should ideally have experience in:

  • RF microwave sub-system design
  • Microwave design tools (e.g., AWR, VSS, ADS, Systemvue, Matlab)
  • EM simulation techniques (e.g., CST)
  • GaAs/GaN MMIC design and application
  • RF synthesiser design using DDS and PLL technologies
  • Designing passive microwave structures
  • Low phase noise design and measurement
  • PCB schematic capture tools (e.g., Mentor)
  • Lab measurements (signal generation, spectrum analysis, vector network analysis)
  • Microwave component selection
  • Requirements management
  • Technical report writing
  • Design reviews and lifecycle management
  • Design for manufacture and cost considerations

This role requires a degree (BSc, BEng, MEng, MSc, PhD, EngD) in Electrical & Electronic Engineering or related sciences like Physics. We value a willingness to learn, progress, and develop through our technical career paths. Passion and pragmatic problem-solving skills are essential.
