Salary: £59,400 to £84,955. Leonardo UK operates a grade-based salary framework with broad bands. The salary range shown reflects the approved grade band for this role, or a narrower hiring range published within that band, and is benchmarked against the external market. Exceptions above the standard range are managed through governance controls to protect internal equity.

Your Impact

Leonardo is a global leader in defence electronics and delivers mission critical systems for situational awareness, electronic warfare and surveillance across land, sea and air. The Radar and Advanced Targeting line of business, based in Edinburgh, is uniquely positioned as one of the world's top manufacturers of radars, lasers and infrared countermeasure systems. As a Project Engineering Lead (PEL) in the Radar and Advanced Targeting sector you will manage a multi-disciplined team tasked with the design and development of complex test solutions. You will work closely with the Project Engineering Manager (PEM), Chief Engineer (CE) and Project Manager (PM) to provide leadership and delivery of new test solutions into this sector. The Advanced Targeting Test Strategy has been established, and teams will be delivering test capability into LDEW, IRCM and laser projects. You will report directly into the PEM for Advanced Targeting TE. This is an exciting and challenging opportunity to lead a skilled team in a time of significant growth in the sector.

What you’ll bring as a Project Lead Engineer

  • Ability to maintain a positive working relationship across all internal and external stakeholders, managing work packages and completing project updates for their allocated elements of the Work Breakdown Structure and on time delivery.
  • Proven experience of leading a team of Test System design engineers and supporting functions across multiple projects and disciplines to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery to time and schedule.
  • Be an integral part of the Integrated Product Teams (IPT's) within the sector reporting test solution progress to the PEM, Programme Manager and IPT leads.
  • Management, drive and prioritisation of tasks in accordance with operational and contractual obligations.
  • Skilled at leading and overall direction/management of the work packages through tasking a team of engineers from multiple disciplines.
  • Manage the continuous development and annual reviews for engineering team.
  • Strategic Planning and resourcing to meet business demands.
  • Maintaining and continuously improving the Advanced Targeting test strategy in conjunction with other sector Project Engineering Leads to maintain commonality.
  • Working closely with the Advanced Targeting Test Equipment Project Engineering Manager and Project Manager to ensure delivery of dependencies.
  • Leading and delivering work package management into sector reviews on a monthly basis.
  • Manage the technical interface with subcontracted test solutions.
  • Reporting work package progress through monthly reviews to the TE PEM, Project Manager and IPT Lead/Manager.
  • Test Systems Engineering focal point for the wider Advanced Targeting IPTs for all things test throughout the product lifecycle.
  • The ability to produce clear concise engineering documentation, with good written and verbal communication skills.
  • A degree or equivalent in a relevant subject.
  • Experience communicating effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, across multiple sites.
  • Strong leadership competency whilst demonstrating team working skills.
  • Knowledge of a typical Engineering lifecycle process and business processes.
  • A willingness to travel within the UK and possibly overseas.
  • Familiarity with electronic systems design and operation.
  • Familiarity of Software, Hardware, Firmware and integration.
  • Drive the development and delivery of accurate estimations in support of equipment test solutions.

This role is subject to pre-employment screening in line with the UK Government’s Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS). An additional range of Personnel Security Controls referred to as National Security Vetting (NSV) may apply, this could include meeting the eligibility requirements for The Security Check (SC) or Developed Vetting (DV).
