Job Description:
Leonardo UK Ltd is seeking a Trade Compliance Manager to work within its Trade Compliance Function to support the management of all aspects of UK Export Control and Compliance and, as required, the export regulations of other countries, such as the US, as they relate to Leonardo’s business operations in the UK.
As Trade Compliance Manager you will provide a business support service including advice and guidance to Leonardo UK’s Integrated Sensing & Protection (LoB) and functions to ensure the LoB remains compliant with UK and other relevant trade control laws and regulations. You will need to attend our Basildon site once or twice week.
Reporting to the Head of Trade Compliance – Electronics Division you will work closely with Project teams within the IS&P LoB and related functions to provide support, including advice and guidance, on International Trade Compliance matters in order to ensure the LoB’s compliance with UK, EU, US and other Export Control laws and regulations (“Trade Control regulations”). The role will include liaison with the LoB management and project teams to ensure that relevant Leonardo directives and related policies and processes are followed.
The role will involve some national travel and possibly international travel.

Key Accountabilities/Areas of Responsibility
- Provide expert advice and guidance to individuals and managers at all levels within the IS&P LoB based at our Basildon facility to ensure compliance with UK and foreign import / export laws (including the US Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and US International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR)), as well as conforming with internal corporate policies and procedures.
- Work with the IS&P LoB to understand Business Winning aspirations and ensure that trade compliance aspects are considered at an early stage, export licencing issues are dealt with in a timely manner, and that project teams create and maintain plans, which address Trade Compliance throughout the project lifecycle. Support and attend Business Winning Reviews and Contract Acceptance Reviews to ensure export control and tade compliance matters are considered and actively addressed.
- Work with Integrated Project Teams (“IPTs”) to ensure Commodity List Classification (CLC)/ Export Control Ratings and Customs classifications are in place to support compliance with UK Export and customs regulations.
- Work with Project Teams and functions to ensure that IPTs put in place plans to ensure that Export Control and Trade Compliance aspects of Equipment and Technology (including data) are properly managed by IPTs in compliance with UK and Foreign export authorisations.
- Deliver Export Control and Trade Compliance training to ensure IPTs and functions are briefed on and aware of Trade Compliance matters relevant to their projects.
- Manage the site Import/Export Control team to ensure full compliance with UK export licences, HMRC Regulations, and other UK authorisations, as well as all relevant Foreign Export licence conditions. This may include preparation and submission of Export Licence applications and other relevant UK authorisations such as MOD F680.
- Initiate internal Trade Compliance assessments, preparation of reports including draft Voluntary Disclosures for approval by Head of Trade Compliance – Electronics Division. Review, amend and approve Trade Compliance reports for internal and external use.
- Preparing for and supporting internal/external audits relating to Export Control and Trade Compliance matters.
Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge
Essential
- Experienced export control/trade compliance practitioner with: Detailed knowledge of UK Export Licencing, including Trade Controls; Good working knowledge of foreign import / export regulations, particularly EU Member States and the US ITAR and US EAR, including US ITAR Agreements and General Correspondence / Retransfer requests under US and other export control regulations; Good working knowledge of UK/EU Customs regulations
- Excellent written skills
- Strong interpersonal/influencing skills to support decision-making based on credible knowledge of International Trade.
- Presentation skills in order to deliver training
- Good all round computer literacy including Microsoft Office applications
- Meeting management skills (organise, chair, record, action)
- Strong interpersonal skills
Desirable
- Awareness of, and general familiarity with, SAP ERP (ECC6 or S4/HANA)
- Good understanding of trade compliance considerations for international support programmes within the aerospace, defence and security sector.
