About the role: Systems Engineer – responsible for bridging the gap between systems engineering and software development for Leonardo’s defence and aerospace products. The role supports deployed and in‑development systems, including mission programming and analysis tools for RAF aircraft and export customers such as Typhoon and Apache, as well as next‑generation tools for the Tempest Aircraft under the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP).

Responsibilities:

  • Engage with stakeholders to define requirements for new systems.
  • Conduct cost and functional performance trade‑offs and evaluate proposed solutions.
  • Enhance capabilities and performance of in‑service systems.
  • Design and integrate new functionality into existing systems.
  • Design and conduct testing and trials to prove equipment function and performance.
  • Perform root‑cause analysis of anomalies observed during integration or evaluation activities.
  • Lead technical activities and initiatives.
  • Mentor and coach other engineers.
  • Create and deliver reports, presentations and proposals to customers and industry partners.
  • Support knowledge sharing and exploitation of good practice.

Qualifications:

  • A science, mathematics or engineering degree, or equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience delivering software‑heavy systems, ideally to customers in regulated industries (military, rail, safety‑critical).
  • Experience working with software teams using DevOps to deliver products.
  • Experience with MBSE methodologies.
  • Knowledge of the systems engineering lifecycle, particularly problem definition, systems and software architecture, software development and qualification, integration, verification and validation, and security.
  • Security clearance: subject to UK Government BPSS screening; may require National Security Vetting (SC or DV).

Compensation and Work Location:

  • Salary Range: Senior Engineer £45,000 – £58,000.
  • Location: Luton (facility at Cap. Green 300).
  • Contract type: Permanent.
  • Hybrid working: hybrid of on‑site and remote, with options for part‑time.
