Leonardo Southampton has a strong heritage in Infrared Detectors since the 1950s. Designed and built in the UK, Leonardo\'s Detectors and thermal imaging sensors play a crucial role in providing visibility and situational awareness, no matter what the environmental conditions.

We have a position available for a Test Systems Engineer to conduct Environmental Testing on our range of Infrared Detectors and support the delivery of test solutions from early prototype development through to production.

Main Purpose of the Job

To carry out environmental tests such as thermal shock, humidity, and temperature cycling. Travel to other sites across the UK or external test houses may be required.

Support the design, development, and through-life support of electro-optical test equipment and processes for Infrared Detectors, from initial development to volume production.

Typical test equipment includes optical, thermal, electronic components, and test software. Hands-on activity is expected, requiring broad knowledge and proven experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpret qualification and mechanical verification test plans to define test strategies and plans.
  • Generate work packages, estimate costs, and engage with suppliers.
  • Deliver work packages on time and within budget.
  • Progress test parts through various stages proactively.
  • Ensure tests comply with relevant standards.
  • Observe, record, and report test activities accurately.
  • Maintain safety and contribute to process improvements.
  • Develop bespoke test solutions and verify test jigs.
  • Program chambers and shaker systems, verify test profiles.
  • Procure, install, and commission new test capabilities.
  • Prepare technical documentation.

Key Skills and Experience:

Essential:

  • HNC/HND or higher in Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to validate electro-mechanical designs under environmental conditions.
  • Technical comprehension for design and problem-solving.
  • Experience with environmental test equipment.
  • Good organization, planning, and execution skills.
  • Attention to detail and team collaboration.
  • Strong communication and analytical skills.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of UKAS and ISO17025 standards.
  • Experience in electrical testing, electro-optics, or mechanical design.
  • Hands-on laboratory testing and measurement experience.
  • Understanding vibration control systems and laser vibrometry.
