Role Overview:

Our client, an innovative medical technology business operating within the global life sciences sector, is looking for an experienced Technical Product Owner to join its growing technology team. The successful candidate will sit at the intersection of Product, Business and Engineering, taking ownership of prioritisation while working closely with Developers, Testers and senior stakeholders to turn complex business requirements into clear, deliverable solutions. This isn't a traditional Product Owner role focused purely on backlog management. You'll need to be technically fluent, comfortable discussing APIs, data models and system behaviour with Developers, and confident making value-based decisions around features, technical improvements and defects. You'll also have the opportunity to shape how the Product function develops as the team grows, with an expectation to eventually take responsibility for mentoring and line managing a Business Analyst.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Product Ownership & Prioritisation
    • Own and manage the product backlog, ensuring it remains well-groomed, estimated and ready for sprint planning.
    • Prioritise features, technical improvements and defects based on business value.
    • Work closely with senior stakeholders to understand priorities and make clear value-based trade-off decisions.
    • Review and accept completed work against agreed acceptance criteria and the Definition of Done.
  • Requirements & Technical Analysis
    • Elicit, analyse and challenge business requirements, translating them into clear user stories and acceptance criteria.
    • Work closely with Developers and Testers throughout delivery.
    • Contribute to technical discussions around APIs, data models, integrations and system behaviour.
    • Use SQL to interrogate data, validate assumptions and support impact analysis.
    • Produce UML diagrams, process flows and data mapping artefacts to communicate solution design.
  • Agile Delivery
    • Facilitate backlog refinement, sprint planning, reviews and retrospectives.
    • Support effective collaboration between Product, Engineering and wider business stakeholders.
    • Advocate for transparency, continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.
    • Ensure requirements are clear and actionable throughout the delivery lifecycle.
  • Team Development
    • Mentor and support Business Analysts as the team grows.
    • Provide regular coaching and quality oversight of analysis outputs.
    • Take on line management responsibilities as the function develops.

What We're Looking For:

Essential Experience

  • Proven experience as a Product Owner or Senior/Technical Business Analyst with ownership of a product backlog.
  • Strong experience prioritising work and making value-based trade-off decisions.
  • Excellent understanding of Agile methodologies, including Scrum and/or Kanban.
  • Strong experience writing user stories and acceptance criteria.
  • Technically fluent, with the confidence to engage Developers in technical design and trade-off discussions.
  • Hands-on SQL experience and a strong understanding of relational data models.
  • Good knowledge of REST APIs, system integrations and client-facing web applications.
  • Experience creating UML diagrams, process flows and data mapping.
  • Experience using backlog management tools such as Azure DevOps, Jira and/or Confluence.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Experience mentoring or developing Business Analysts or other team members.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience writing Gherkin-style acceptance criteria and working with BDD.
  • Experience creating BPMN process diagrams.
  • Experience within medical, biotechnology, pharmaceutical or another regulated environment.
  • Product Owner certification such as CSPO or PSPO.
  • Experience using AI-assisted tools such as Claude Code to support analysis and delivery.

If you're a technically minded Product Owner who enjoys working closely with Engineering, making meaningful prioritisation decisions and taking ownership of products that have a genuine impact, we'd love to hear from you.
