Purpose & key responsibilities of the role

The Mechanical Technician will be responsible for delivering a service that provides a safe, reliable plant that achieves production and quality targets. Availability for reasonable levels of overtime and call-outs is part of the role: the out-of-hours callout rota entails being scheduled 1 in every 10 days. Each rota day worked is paid, equating to circa £3,971 annually. Additionally, overtime payments of circa £5,000+ can be earned on top of the salary advertised.

Main tasks & key accountabilities

  • You will work independently and as part of a team to maintain continuous plant and equipment to the specified safety, quality, environmental and reliability standards, following SHE procedures, SWP’s, and permits to work, with minimum supervision
  • You will scope, identify and purchase the materials needed to carry out required work; and ensure all work is controlled and documented in SAP
  • You will use a 5Y process to identify the root cause of equipment failure, and propose solutions
  • You will demonstrate proficiency in all specified core SWP’s, contribute to their ongoing development, and participate in the continuous improvement of maintenance procedures and systems
  • You will ensure that housekeeping standards in the workshop and out on the plant are maintained, and report any incidents (safety, quality & environmental) to minimise the risk of recurrence
  • You will work with and supervise contractors during maintenance operations, occasionally leading small groups of contractors around specific work activities; and act as Work Competent Person, Person In Charge of Work, and Responsible Person for Isolations
  • You will actively participate in the call-out rota

Your ideal profile

  • You are a time-served tradesperson with a recognized Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship, and HNC / NVQ Level 3 or equivalent
  • You have experience of competently maintaining rotating equipment such as gearboxes, pumps and fans; and you have the ability to learn the specific maintenance requirements for specialized Lyocell equipment
  • You can demonstrate experience of working to safe systems of work, including creating risk assessments and implementing hazard controls
  • You are flexible, willing to adopt new practices, and able to work to deadlines
  • You are self-motivated with a collaborative approach, able to work unsupervised or as part of a team and to take accountability for your own performance
  • You are driven, responsible, adaptable, collaborative, communicative, ethical, honest, and organised, with a positive, can-do attitude.
  • Fork Lift Truck licence is desirable but not essential, as training will be given
