Main duties of the job

As a Salaried GP at Len Valley Practice, you will provide high-quality medical care to our patient population, in line with the requirements of the GMS contract. This will include the diagnosis, treatment and management of acute and long‑term conditions, safe and evidence‑based prescribing, and maintaining accurate and timely clinical records. You will manage a range of patient contacts such as face‑to‑face and telephone consultations, online queries, duty cover and occasional home visits, supported by our wider clinical and administrative team. You will take responsibility for a fair share of the practice workload, including referrals, repeat prescribing, lab results, and workflow documents, ensuring these are completed in a timely manner. You will work within national and local guidelines, contribute to QOF and quality improvement activity, and support clinical governance across the practice.

The role also involves engaging in regular clinical meetings, audit and CPD, completing appraisal and revalidation requirements, and contributing to the development of services. You will be encouraged to support medical student training, share learning with colleagues, and participate in collaborative team working to promote a culture of continuous improvement. In short, you will carry out the full range of duties expected of a GP in primary care while being part of a supportive, forward‑thinking practice team.

Len Valley Practice is a friendly forward‑thinking GP surgery based in the historic village of Lenham Kent caring for just over ten thousand patients across Lenham and Harrietsham. The practice is led by five GP partners supported by salaried GPs, GP registrars, a strong nursing team, healthcare assistants, pharmacists, physiotherapy and paramedic practitioners as well as skilled administrative and dispensary staff. We provide a wide range of primary care services including long‑term condition management, immunisations, maternity and family planning, minor surgery, health screening and treatment of illness or injury. Rated Good by the Care Quality Commission the practice is committed to delivering safe, effective and patient‑centred care. We pride ourselves on being an approachable, supportive and community‑focused organisation with a strong emphasis on teamwork, professional development and delivering high quality care for all.

Job responsibilities

  • Delivering safe, effective medical care to patients registered with the practice.
  • Providing services in line with the GMS contract.
  • Prescribing in accordance with national and local guidance.
  • Managing patients with long‑term conditions and complex health needs.
  • Completing administration in a timely manner, including referrals, repeat prescriptions, lab results, workflow tasks and associated documentation.
  • Undertaking consultations in line with the practice timetable, including face‑to‑face, telephone, video and online consultations, duty doctor sessions, and occasional home visits.
  • Maintaining accurate clinical records in line with practice policy and clinical guidance.
  • Sharing practice workload fairly and working collaboratively with colleagues.
  • Adhering to best practice as set out in clinical guidelines and through audit processes.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement and quality initiatives within the practice.
  • Taking delegated responsibility for specific areas of QOF.
  • Attending and contributing to practice meetings.
  • Supporting clinical governance, audit and training activities.
  • Complying with appraisal and revalidation requirements.
  • Committing to CPD and promoting a learning culture across the team.

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Participate in audits and service reviews.
  • Support local and national initiatives to improve patient care and service delivery.
  • Take part in the review of significant events and near‑miss incidents using structured approaches such as root cause analysis (RCA).

Records Management

Staff must ensure the timely and accurate creation, maintenance and storage of records (including clinical notes, administrative records and emails) in accordance with practice policies and statutory requirements such as GDPR and the Freedom of Information Act. All staff are responsible for safeguarding their own health and safety and that of others, and for working within relevant legislation including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Staff must follow practice health and safety policies and report concerns promptly.

Safeguarding

The practice is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. All staff are expected to share this commitment and act in accordance with local guidance and referral criteria.

Security

All staff are responsible for maintaining practice security, including keeping restricted areas locked and not sharing access codes. Any suspicious behaviour must be reported immediately.

Service Implementation & Improvement

Assist with safeguarding and referral processes. Understand legal and communication issues around child protection, domestic abuse, vulnerable adults, substance misuse and addictive behaviours. Contribute ideas to improve patient care and service delivery. Support the practice in achieving contractual and quality targets. The practice operates a strict no‑smoking policy. Staff must not smoke or use e‑cigarettes on practice premises or while representing the practice. All staff should be prepared to accept reasonable additional duties, or relinquish existing ones, to ensure the smooth and effective running of the practice.
