Are you passionate about tackling health inequalities, improving population health outcomes, and ensuring effective and cost-effective public health interventions? Do you excel in applying advanced epidemiological, statistical and health economics methods to inform both evidence-based decision-making and demonstrating impact? If so, we have an exciting role for you at Public Health in Derbyshire County Council.

About Us

Join our specialist Public Health Knowledge and Intelligence Team/PH Research Team, where we work to improve population health and address health inequalities across Derbyshire. This is a dynamic and exciting opportunity to influence public health strategies through innovative analysis, impactful research, and knowledge translation. We are committed to ensuring our services are effective, cost-effective, evidence-informed, and targeted at reducing disparities in health outcomes.

About The Role

We are seeking a motivated and skilled professional with specialist expertise in epidemiology, advanced statistical methods, and health economics. You will collaborate with others to lead and address some of the most pressing health challenges in our communities, ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently to deliver the greatest impact on population health.

Key Responsibilities

  • Statistical Analysis & Research Design: Develop and implement study designs, including sample size calculations, power analysis, and hypothesis testing. Apply regression techniques (e.g., linear, logistic) and survey methodologies to identify and understand drivers of health inequalities.
  • Advanced Statistical Techniques: Conduct in-depth analyses using methods such as Poisson regression, survival analysis, and time series modelling (e.g., ARIMA). Perform geospatial (GIS) and multivariate analyses to map inequalities and identify areas requiring targeted intervention.
  • Evaluation and Impact Assessments: Lead on quasi-experimental studies, including interrupted time series analysis, difference-in-differences (DiD), and propensity score matching, to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions aimed at reducing health disparities.
  • Health Economics: Conduct cost-effectiveness, cost-utility, and benefit-cost analyses to ensure resources are allocated efficiently and interventions are delivering maximum value for money. Use and interpret metrics such as Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) and Quality Adjusted Life Years (QALYs) to evaluate the impact of services on population health and inequalities. Provide insights and advice to support the design and implementation of cost-effective services that deliver improved health outcomes while addressing inequities.
  • Public Health Strategy Delivery: Drive key priorities within the Public Health Strategy, with a particular focus on reducing health inequalities and ensuring services are both impactful and cost-effective. Lead/contribute to deep dives that also support the JSNA transformation programme to ensure the needs of the most disadvantaged groups are addressed, including contributing to writing for publication on areas where there are gaps in the evidence.
  • Capacity Building and Training: Design and deliver engaging statistical and health economics training sessions within the team and for non-specialist audiences, enhancing analytical and economic evaluation awareness and capacity across public health.

Essential Skills & Expertise

We are looking for candidates with:

  • Proven experience in leading programmes and projects that include statistical analysis, epidemiology, and health economics, with a focus on improving population health outcomes and reducing inequalities.
  • Expertise in conducting economic evaluations, including benefit-cost, cost-utility, and cost-effectiveness analyses.
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex data and health economic insights to diverse audiences, ensuring they are actionable.
  • A passion for continuous learning, with the flexibility to develop expertise in new areas as required for the role.
