Senior Design Manager - Construction & Infrastructure
Location: Bristol | Flexible working arrangements
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Contract: Permanent | Full-time
The opportunity
An established multidisciplinary consultancy is looking to appoint an experienced Senior Design Manager to support its growing portfolio of construction and infrastructure projects.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys the challenge of bringing together different disciplines, managing complex design processes and ensuring projects are effectively coordinated from the earliest stages of development.
You’ll be involved in a varied mix of projects, working closely with clients, consultants, contractors and technical teams to manage the design process, resolve challenges and help deliver successful project outcomes.
The role would suit someone who has developed strong design management experience within a main contractor, consultancy or multidisciplinary environment and is looking for an opportunity to apply that knowledge across a broader range of projects and sectors.
You’ll have the opportunity to take real ownership of your work, build strong relationships with project stakeholders and contribute to the continued development of design management practices within the business.
The role
Your responsibilities will include:
- Managing and coordinating the design process across construction and infrastructure projects
- Working with multidisciplinary design teams to ensure information is developed, coordinated and delivered effectively
- Establishing and managing design programmes, deliverables and key project milestones
- Developing design management strategies, scopes, responsibility matrices and associated project documentation
- Identifying design risks, coordination challenges and potential programme impacts, and working with project teams to resolve them
- Managing the flow of design information between clients, consultants, contractors and other stakeholders
- Reviewing design information to support technical coordination, quality and compliance
- Chairing and contributing to design meetings, workshops and project reviews
- Monitoring design progress, reporting against programmes and supporting effective project controls
- Working collaboratively with project managers, engineers and other technical specialists throughout the project lifecycle
- Supporting the development of effective design management processes and contributing to continuous improvement
You’ll play an important role in ensuring that design activities are properly planned, managed and coordinated, with a clear understanding of how design decisions influence programme, buildability, cost and overall project delivery.
About you
We’re interested in speaking with experienced Design Managers and Senior Design Managers who have:
- A strong background in design management within construction, engineering or the built environment
- Experience managing multidisciplinary design processes and coordinating technical teams
- A good understanding of pre-construction, design development and project delivery
- Experience managing design programmes, deliverables and technical information
- The ability to identify design risks, resolve coordination issues and manage competing priorities
- A sound understanding of construction methodologies, buildability and the relationship between design and delivery
- Experience working with clients, consultants, contractors and wider project stakeholders
- Strong organisational, communication and problem-solving skills
- The confidence to manage meetings, challenge technical information constructively and keep projects moving forward
- A proactive and collaborative approach, with the ability to take ownership and work independently
Experience gained within a main contractor, multidisciplinary consultancy or engineering practice would be relevant.
Familiarity with BIM processes, digital design coordination and project planning tools would also be beneficial.
We’re particularly interested in individuals who combine strong technical understanding with a practical appreciation of how projects are delivered. Someone who can look beyond individual design packages, understand the wider project objectives and bring people together to achieve them.
Why consider this opportunity?

- Gain exposure to different sectors, disciplines and technical challenges
- Take ownership of design management activities on complex projects
- Work alongside experienced multidisciplinary professionals
