Overview

Lead Mechanical Design Engineer – Tooling role at Leidos. Ideally based near our office in Wickford (Essex). UK-based remote workers will be considered if willing to travel to the office occasionally. This role involves leading projects and a small team of engineers in developing tooling for automotive manufacturing customers.

What will you be doing?

  • Tooling Design: Collaborate and innovate to create detailed tooling designs, including fixtures, jigs, clamps, and other specialised equipment required for manufacturing processes.
  • Lead: Lead a small team of engineers throughout the design process.
  • CAD Modelling: Use CAD software to create 2D and 3D models of tooling and mechanical components. Ensure designs are accurate and meet specifications.
  • Analysis and Testing: Perform structural and functional analysis to assess tooling design integrity and performance. Conduct tests and simulations to identify issues and implement improvements.
  • Material Selection: Assist in selecting appropriate materials for tooling components, considering strength, durability, and cost.
  • Cost Estimation: Participate in cost estimation for tooling projects to help keep them within budget.
  • Continuous Improvement: Contribute to the ongoing improvement of mechanical designs to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve product quality.

What Sets You Apart

  • Experienced in mechanical, industrial tooling design, ideally with automotive industry experience; all sectors considered.
  • Strong proficiency in CAD software, preferably SolidWorks.
  • Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) and simulation tools.
  • Relevant engineering qualification or qualified by experience in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Basic knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, and machining techniques.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Understanding of safety and quality standards in manufacturing.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain BPSS clearance.
