Job Description
Chief Engineer
Location: Farnborough, with flexibility to work from home dependent on business demands
Salary: £75,800 – £99,800
The Role:
As a Chief Engineer in Leidos, you will be immersed in one of our key programmes transformation of the UKs biometrics platform to cloud. On behalf of our central government customer, you will have direct impact on the current and future iterations of one of our most important pieces of critical national infrastructure.
The Chief Engineer has overall responsibility for all engineering activities on the project and are part of the project leadership team. Their responsibility and accountability extends from project start up through to operations and closedown and includes on contract growth.
The Chief Engineers responsibilities include:
- Delivery and technical assurance of the solution within the quality, cost and schedule constraints
- Achieving acceptance of the solution by the customer
- Providing technical leadership and mentorship across the project
- Ensuring that the engineering processes within the project are commensurate with the requirements of the contracted standards and Leidos corporate governance
- Identifying the skills and staff required to deliver the engineering solution
- Defining the engineering practices and resources required to deliver the project and services within the constraints of the company engineering policies
- Managing the effectiveness of engineering activities across the project
Required Skills and Experience:
The candidate is required to be a technical leader, able to coordinate and direct engineering teams in successful delivery and acceptance of the system. They can execute and perform without assistance, and possess significant practical experience and applied knowledge across the following areas:
- Complex systems integration projects, involving IT systems;
- Technical Management of subcontractors
- Systems Engineering and understanding of the principles behind each of the main processes
- Technical Team Management including the planning of work packages, allocation to team members and reporting
- Technical Team Leadership including providing technical direction to team members
- Held the position of Chief Engineer on a programme in excess of £50M
In addition to the areas above, the candidate is required to have:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and work well in a team environment;
- Ability to clearly articulate and communicate design and technical concepts in written and verbal forms;
- Intellectual calibre and confidence to conduct complex discussions with civilian and service customers and suppliers;
- Commercial awareness sufficient to support discussions with customers and suppliers
Desired Skills and Experience:
- Public sector and sensitive projects
- Background in Software Engineering or IT Systems Integration
- Knowledge of Defence or Government organisation, processes and procedures;
Typical Minimum Education & Experience:
- Ideally require a Bachelors degree and proven engineering experience in IT/Software related systems (including a leadership position).
- Will also consider individuals with equivalent experience / combined education.
- Chartered Engineer desirable.
Clearance Requirements: Due to the nature of the project, this role will require having or obtaining UK SC clearance.
