We are looking for a motivated and dynamic Attendance Team Co‑ordinator to join our dedicated service at Leicestershire County Council. This rewarding opportunity allows you to make a tangible difference to children’s lives by supporting improved school attendance across the county. In this role, you will work collaboratively with schools, families and partner agencies to ensure every child of compulsory school age has access to an education that meets their needs, abilities and aspirations.

Responsibilities

  • You will lead Targeted Support Meetings with schools—both in person and virtually—to identify barriers to attendance and agree impactful, tailored interventions for pupils who are persistently or severely absent, or at risk of becoming so.
  • You will drive improvement through both support and challenge, using data, professional judgement and strong partnership working to achieve meaningful outcomes.
  • Where necessary, you will contribute to the legal intervention process, including initiating proceedings, preparing cases, drafting witness statements and presenting evidence in the Magistrates’ Court on behalf of the Local Authority.

Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 4 / B‑TEC Business and Administration or equivalent with A Levels/GCSE (Maths and English).
  • Substantial demonstrable experience as outlined below.
  • Strong understanding of school attendance frameworks, including the Education Act 1996, Leicestershire County Council Code of Conduct and Protocol, and current DfE guidance (Working Together to Improve School Attendance).
  • Ability to analyse complex information and make informed, proportionate decisions about next steps for children and families, including possible legal intervention where necessary.
  • Experience of multi‑agency working, particularly with schools, family help or social care services.
  • Knowledge and/or experience of working within a legal framework, including advising on attendance‑related legislation.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with families facing challenges, using a supportive yet assertive approach.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the confidence to influence, negotiate and present information clearly across a wide range of settings, including at court.
  • Strong data skills, with the ability to interpret attendance data and translate it into strategic, targeted action.
