About the Role

During your employment we will fully support your journey to becoming a fully qualified Cycle Instructor; once qualified you will receive a 1st4Sport Level 2 award in Instructing Cycle Training. You will be on an annualised hours contract (1400 hours, 0.83FTE) and will be expected to maximise your diary (Monday – Friday) during term time (38 weeks). The earliest start time would be 08:45am and the latest finish time would be 03:30pm to fit the school day. You are required to be flexible to undertake work after school or in holidays to maximise Bikeability targets.

You will actively promote safe and active travel initiatives by delivering a programme of Bikeability Cycle Training to school children. The role involves delivering all three levels of Bikeability Training plus Learn to Ride, in both on‑ and off‑road environments, progressing the rider’s skills and confidence to enable them to ride in more complex road environments. The training follows a recognised national delivery standard. This post is home‑based with responsibility for managing your own bookings, workload, and allocated number of schools. You are required to actively promote training and your availability to schools to ensure a full programme of Bikeability training is booked and delivered.

You will be required to store/transport your bike (ridden and driven) and all necessary equipment to training locations throughout the county; therefore you must have access to a car, hold a valid current driving licence and have business insurance for work journeys as required. Personal protective equipment will be provided and must be worn as instructed when carrying out duties. The nature of this work may involve you carrying out work outside of normal working hours. Some duties will have to be undertaken at short notice, and the actual working period may vary from day to day to match service needs. From time to time you will be required to attend training courses, conferences, seminars or other meetings essential for your own training needs and the needs of the service, and you must be committed to continuing professional development.

About You

To apply for this post, you must:

  • Achieve the 1st4Sport Level 2 Award in Instructing Cycle Training or be willing to undertake this four‑day training course;
  • Have Math and English GCSE Grade C or equivalent.
  • Have IT skills and experience of using Microsoft Office systems (Word, Excel, email).
  • Have experience of working with school‑aged children in an advisory, teaching, coaching or instructor’s role;
  • Be able to communicate effectively with children, teachers, school staff and parents, demonstrating a professional, diplomatic and tactful approach.
  • Be a regular and competent cyclist with an enthusiasm for cycling;
  • Be able to cycle in a variety of traffic conditions to Bikeability Level 3 standard and inspire the next generation to make more sustainable transport choices.
  • Be self‑motivated and able to work on your own initiative, as part of a team;
  • Work in an organised and methodical manner; be flexible, reliable and have good interpersonal skills;
  • Be able to prioritise and deliver to deadlines and record information with attention to detail.
  • Be a clear and positive communicator.
