Switchboard Operator

- Job responsibilities
- Operate a telephone switchboard and associated communications systems as required.
- Process telephone calls received via the switchboard consoles and other extensions within the switchboard area.
- Operate internal bleep/pager and mobile telephone systems.
- Provide a welcoming service for routine enquiries and assistance to staff users and the general public.
- Carry out all emergency procedures relating to hospital alerts/alarms (e. g., cardiac arrest, equipment alarms, major incidents, fire alerts, security/police response).
- Contact staff as required in accordance with hospital procedures and maintain records of contact procedures.
- Test emergency telephones, fire bleeps, and cardiac arrest bleeps, ensuring all relevant documentation is completed.
- Report faults and record replacement of telephone handsets when extension faults occur.
- Arrange the exchange of bleeps when medical staff change disciplines and record details within relevant documentation.
- Handle incoming fax messages for departments, documenting arrival, notification, and collection times.
- Inform Supervisors/Senior Telephonist of changes required to the operator directory to keep it accurate and up to date.
- Access the In‑Patient system (HISS/Alfa List or similar) to respond to enquiries and forward callers to the correct destination.
- Provide cover for annual leave/absences and sickness (sometimes at short notice) to keep the switchboard manned at all times.
- Provide cover on bank and public holidays as required to maintain a constant service.
- Carry out administration duties when required, such as training and supporting starters.

- Must have GCSE Maths & English.
Experience
- Experience of working within a switchboard or customer‑focused environment.
- Experience of dealing with difficult situations and ability to remain calm during emergencies.
- Keyboard skills at RSA Level 1.
- Previous experience in healthcare or large complex organisations.
